Hey guys,

dumb question... Anyways, I know there’s a special lug but you need to take off the wheels for theft purposes, but I was wondering what those actually look like? I do have lug nuts, but I was wondering if I by any chance got rid of something by accident..

Basically i bought winter tires, then changed my mind on driving the car in snow, so I sold the winter tires/rims... I wanna make sure i didn’t hand off the PP1 lug nut that takes these actual wheels off because i’m looking to buy a wheel/rim package soon, and I need to obviously get these off somehow.

Thanks!

There's no special tool on PP1, unless you bought the security option.

you'd know it if you had the locking lug..

its 1 lug nut per wheel that locks. it doesnt look like the others, and it sticks out farther than the stock lug nuts. check the image link below

your new rims may require new lug nuts, but even if they dont, consider replacing the stock ones with at the very least, some solid single piece ones. the stock ones are 2 piece, they have a thin chromed metal cap. which can let moisture under it, causes the cap and actual nut to corrode, swells the lug nut and can make them hard to almost impossible to remove.

Yeap, i have that one lug nut that sticks out a bit... Thats why I was asking, if there’s a specific lug nut i need to take that out. All I have with me is some of the silver lugs. I remember giving away a VERY LONG lug nut with the winters i sold, hoping that wasn’t the key to taking mine off

ok so if you have 4 lug nuts that look the same and 1 lug nut that does not lok like the others and it longer and is more a cylinder with a squiggly line cut into its surface then you need a "key" to get that off. The "key will look like a socket more or less and if you look inside of it , it will have the same squiggly pattern in it. You need this key to take that lock lug off. If you have lost the key, you can go to a dealer and have them remove it and just put a regular lug back on if its an oem lug. If its an aftermarket locking lug you can go to a auto zone and buy a lock lug removal kit they are about 15 bucks. do you happen to have a picture of your wheels with the lugs?

you could probably order a replacement from ford.. although i bet it'd be expensive..

they have some videos on youtube of using a 12 pt socket, slightly smaller than the diameter of the the locking nut, removing the lock. either by cutting some grooves in the locking nut or by forcing it on with a hammer/mini sledge

there are some universal keys, around, and some key sets can be ordered on amazon if you need. one of the keys in the set should get them loose for you. also the place that does your rims/tires will probably have some method of removing the lock should you not have the key.

Here are picks to make sure we talking about same thing. Thats the OEM nut and its key. If thats what you have and lost the key too then just go by a dealer they can take it off.

I think i found it. I have 4 lugs and the 5th is this bigger one with the similar shape as the one on the wheel!

FWIW, the locking lug nuts are made by a company named McGard. At least the kit that came with my '18. You can order spare keys for your lug nuts.
Personally, I've got a set of solid Gorilla splined locking lugs in black waiting to go on.
