Will the 10r80 shift on its own in every mode? Reason I’m asking I have taken my car to the track and once in awhile the car won’t shift on its own out of first gear. I usually am in advance sport mode with the shifter in “S”. Should I be using the paddle shifters?

When you pull the shifter back into S, it will not shift on it's own. That is full manual mode.

That is only true if you start to use the paddles. It will then lock itself into manual mode. You can put the shifter all the way back in S mode and that is basically sport mode. But it will shift on its own until you use the paddles. Then if you want to get it back into shifting on its own, hold the up shift paddle for a few seconds until the paddles on the screen flash, then let go. It will go back into auto shifting mode even though its still in S mode (sport).

To make it easy on you, anytime you see the gear # value in the dash it means it's in manual mode. It does automatically downshift to 1 when you come to a stop regardless of the settings, but that shouldn't be an issue on track.

As long as you come to a complete stop you can also use the paddles to select 2nd gear take offs. This is handy when having to turn into an intersection after stopping, starting off in 2nd gear saves you having to search for the right paddle (1st to 2nd shift) mid way through turning into a corner.

On my 2019 the gear indicator always shows. On my 2017, it only showed with a tune, or if I used the paddle. So depending upon the year, it may show the gear # at all times.

Hey @Darrin Polston welcome to the site and congrats with S550 ownership.

So this is an excerpt from the main 10R80 FAQ thread, which will help anyone who is new to the 10R80 understand it and it's functions.
For 10R80 Newbies, all you need to know:
The design and workings of a 10R80:
https://www.motor.com/magazine-summary/need-10-speeds/

SAE International Automotive Engineering article; go to page 10 about the 10R80:

10R80 Trans Modes vs Drive Modes + Paddle Shift facts:

Pay close attention to the last link above and read all (3) pages. It has every bit of info to learn about the Transmission Mode vs Drive Modes and the tech about paddle shifting relationships.

This is the main 10R80 thread with a TON of informative info and links starting on Post 1, Page 1.

Everything is broken out into sections and there's a lot of info, plus included PDF docs too.

Yeah mine is always on now, and it happened after I got tuned

Hmm. This thread doesn't seem to be for me. I like manuals.

Gonna drop this here for the laughs though to contribute something to the group:

I like manuals as well, I just don't want a junk MT82! I've broke T56s, sure as hell am not messing with the MT82.

That is an option? I have a lund tune on my 2015 right now, is there a way to do that with forscan or would I have to reach out to lund and have them send a new tune file?

Right now I have my ngauge lights show the current gear

I don't know if that is an option that tuners have. I just know that when I had my 2017 that whenever I loaded a tune the gear # showed up in both D and S
