Hey all, new to the forum, thanks for the add.

Has anyone attempted the oil canister conversion? Do you consider it worth the trouble?

Thanks

Welcome.

I have not tried the conversion. Not necessary IMHO if one properly torques the spin on (which was specifically developed for the 5.2).

Agree just as manual says put bead of oil on gasket and torque to proper specs as said and go on down the road. Plus the kit to just convert it to the cartridge filter is an expensive needless use of money. Obviously they changed it cause of those fools that didn't put oil on the gasket and just tightened it like other cars and didn't torque it. Had one guy on a forum trying to say it says not to lubricate the gasket. I straightened him out real fast before others took him at his word.

I am planning on doing this purely because of how many damn oil changes I do and this is less messy. Am interested to hear if someone has experience as well.

If it’s anything like @kairojya describes, good luck w the “less messy” goal :)

Boooo...I didn't realize this would result in oil pouring out in the exact same place. For some reason I thought this would stick out further than the spin-on housing. BOooooo.

Thanks for the tip. Added to the cart!

Not worth the trouble in my opinion. As been said... oil the gasket on the filter and torque to the correct specs. For additional safety I use a big hose clamp around the spin on filter that rests against the oil filter housing to ensure the filter will not back off. No need to spend up to $1k to have the oil housing replaced when you can follow some simple instructions and end up with the same results as with the cartridge filter.

Like johnny1 said....the 14" form a funnel works perfectly. And you get great access if you take off the left front wheel and go in through there. I won't even attempt it without taking of the wheel.

Last week I looked under the car and the oil pan is covered in oil. Checked the filter and it was loose. Never had any car do this before. Now I am uncomfortable about this filter situation.

I will promise you that a filter that has an o-ring that was lubricated in oil and then torq'd to the 18ft/lbs will NOT spin off on you. But if either of those two conditions aren't met, there's a good chance of it. I have a track only car with a spin-on and I have a hell of a time getting it loose every oil change.

Probably not torqued correctly. I had a spin on filter for 20K miles. Did my own oil changes, torqued the filter properly and it never moved.
