Shit, the T5 was way better than the SROD, LOL. Not many of us are this old.

My T5 with a Hurst Shifter was one of the best shifting boxes I've ever used, but my second gear synchro died just like everyone else's.
it shifted great but I was replacing 2nd and 3rd syncros annually, it wasn't bad under warranty but after the warranty ran out it ran into some money

Yeah ok whatever. Look up tremerc failure threads. Haters will always hate.

I have couple s197 gt vs 2023 is a day and night different in smoothness.

To the original poster, buy what u can afford. Don't need you here with another fat ugly dark duckling (s650)vs older pretty swan (s550)!

It doesn't sound like geitting the A10 to live is any treat, either.

F it. 8 speed dual clutch for everyone.

So because you've had problems, every single MT-82 in the world is junk then.

Cool story.

Having driven manuals almost all my life I can say with some certainty that the clutch feel and transmission is the worst I have ever driven and I am going back as far as a 1982 Ford Cortina (Europe)

However removing the assist clutch spring helped or at least made the clutch bite reliable and consistent.
People breaking the the shifter forks? Well, watching videos with some guy with arms like Arnold popping a blood vessel in their bicep while shifting may have something to do with it and powershifting to boot.
That said if my transmission ever does curl up and die I am replacing it with an A10, Bullitt or no.

It cracks me up reading some of these comments… my friends car.. wait my cousins car lol…. The one thing none of these comments post are the driver issues is what a lot of transmission problems come from… but hey everyone on these forms is some pro driver I guess 😂

I have a 17 with a whipple. Car has 56k miles and shifts like new. No issues here yet. But I'm not out there doing no lift shifts or power shifting. I do plan on going with a mgw shifter and fluid change and steel braided line in the future. But so far so good.

First, i've never driven a mustang with a mt82. Second i don't even own a 6th gen. I'm looking at getting a 7th gen and frankly the only real reason i'd get the dark horse is for the tremec. I have a supercharged 06 gt with the 3650 and after stiff motor mounts and CHE torque limiters it never locks me out of 3rd or any gear for that matter. I assume the mt82 problems are similar with it's semi-remote shifter or is it a combinatin of that and the higher rpms of the coyote? I come here for answers because this is where all the mt82 owners are at.
Jumping back to the main questions of the OP. For reference I've just bought a 2023 with the MT82-D4 (custom order) earlier this year. I learned on a friends '16 GT and got semi-good on my car given this is my first manual. I have had chances to drive the car semi-hard on back-roads but I haven't taken it to the limit yet either. Additionally I have had in-depth conversations with The Topher when he went and reviewed my car along with other S550 owners at cars & coffees this past summer.

Regarding 3rd gear lockout or any other shifting issues: Personally I'd argue 100% of my issues have been related to me as the driver, I haven't had lock out, but I've had weird miss shifts or failed shifts (not going into gear) but in hindsight almost all of that has been on me as the user/driver.
Things I've found that of greatly lessened the chances of me having any issues has been words of wisdom such as fast hands slow feet (being fast and deliberate with moving the shifter, but slowing down the clutch pull out after putting it into gear).

In my own thoughts, most of the problems you will see on the trans I think 90% of the complaints are from folks that don't take the time to learn the transmission, they drive one way and refuse to conform to the car. You're also just going to get 90% negative experiences being on the internet and forums anyways. If you watch Misha's videos of taking both the manual/modified S550 Mustang's and the tuner specials out as well on the Nordschleife, he makes zero comments about the transmission, and in fact he gets warned ahead of time about its temperament and modifies his technique around it.

I spoke somewhat at length with Topher about his thoughts on the trans and he didn't have any complaints (at least from a reviewers perspective that tends to beat on the car a bit). I can say with certainty that Topher would've said something if he took issue with the car (stock of course). Again it's a little different from an owners perspective but I digress.

Since I finally found the right shop to get it done at (and because the one owner let me try out is MGW X-Spec), I'll be having the MGW Standard (standard length) shifter sometime late next year along with a weighted knob from raceseng (depending on availability), and transmission fluid swap to BG Synchroshift II. The owner that let me try his basically had everything minus the weighted knob and it felt similar enough to the tremec in the mach1 at the dealer at the time I picked my car up. That said maybe my memory could be hazy but the changes created a pretty vast/night and day improvement so do with that what you will.

Whatever you decide best wishes op, I'm sure someone is gonna tell me I'm a dumbass or I'm not objective because I love my purple car too much so have at it. My butt isn't changing any power outside of stock NA so I don't really see a need to go down a Ben Calimer route until I blow the trans doing something stupid (granted there are a few guys trying to get me to whipple but I haven't folded yet).

To be fair, he's probably got more track miles on his car than most. It's likely he's seen problems that we'll see down the road.

Just because his opinion isn't yours (or mine) doesn't mean he's wrong.

And he's right that I'd choose a different box if I could.

fair enough.
and in my opinion, beating my trans on the street for 60k miles. Still the original clutch, hasn't missed a beat.
