Hello,

I was at a track day yesterday. We went out and made 2 laps and another vehicle had an issue. We all had to come in and wait on pit lane for about 10 minutes. I left the car running for about 3 minutes and then shut it off. I went back out and in less than 1/2 a lap I went into limp mode. I know there are lot of reasons why this happens. My question for this group is should I have left the car running for those 10 minutes while sitting on pit lane?

I was at Heartland Park Topeka and air temp was around 90, but low humidity for this time of year. I went out for my second and third sessions with no issues at all.

I've left my car running in that exact scenario many times and never had an issue. That being said if the track workers are nice enough to let me know that the wait will be 10+ minutes I usually turn the car off.

What you did in the pit had very little to do with it going into limp mode. The better question is, what was so hot that it did that and then address that issue. Did you look at any of the temps?

Limp mode is a bit of broad descriptor. Do you have more info? what was hot? oil temps? CHTs? trans? diff?
Oil temp was 220 range, that was the only one I checked. I was not sure if leaving the car running was better than shutting it off for that amount of time.

Wasn’t due to oil temp. I was at 245 today. In town driving and it’s 105! I’ve heard of others hitting 275 oil temps without issues.

you won't have limp mode issues until CHTs hit 245+, oil temps north of 295, etc. Would be quite curious to know what did it.

Either way, idling hot shouldn't be an issue. It's got big fans and would be circulating that water/oil to cool it down. I personally don't turn off the engine in the hot pits during a black flag - I'd boil to death without my coolshirt system. I wouldn't worry unless it happens again.

No car should go into limp mode after a couple laps then idling for 10 min. even a 16 tech pack should not do that. Seems unusual to me.

Either the rear diff or transmission. Both get cooked by the exhaust and neither has a fan on them. So when sitting still they can get really hot.

I remember sitting in traffic seeing those transmission temperatures shoot up even after I installed the coolers on my 2016.

It happened again at the track yesterday. This time it would not reset. We tried all we could at the track, but had to get it over to a dealership. Turns out it was a harness pin issue with my blip module. The code reader we had at the track would not pick up the code. However, the dealership was able to track it down pretty quickly. I am going to reach out to X-ingeering to see if they have a new harness/feedback on the issue. Glad it was an easy fix, just a small hassle to get back home.

Update - X-ingeering was great as Will got back to me same day and is shipping me a new harness. Excellent customer service.

Something else going on here…..220 is nothing.

My blip module used to get tired and sloppy. But it has settled in nicely over the course of time. Wink.
