Went to pass someone yesterday with the a/c on (it was 100°) and when I put it into second and went wot, the a/c never turned off. I went through a couple of gears and it stayed on the whole time. I'm usually a windows down driver but it was scorching. I'm surprised I've never noticed this before. I guess my car wants to keep me comfy no matter what's happening? Lol

Only A/C clutch with disengage , and the air will still blow. It does take some time for you to feel it in the car. Going through a few gears is not long enough as the you have to get rid of the cold thermal mass in the aluminium evaporator and all your aircon vent pipes etc before you start to feel warmer air.

I'd investigate as the A/C comnpressor disengaging at WOT has been a standard design practice long before cars had computers. I'd wager the fan kept blowing and the residule "cold" in the evaporator didn't cause much change during the passing manuver? My Mach 1 Trach Attach session was in 100 degree heat and we all ran the cars' A/C with windows up to aleviate the heat. The compressor cut out at WOT but the fan kept blowing at max speed and the car remained cool and comfortable inside.

I was thinking that might be the case. Even in that heat the 5.0 made the pass really quick. I don't beat on my car a lot, so moments like that are few and far between. Since I bought my car new 4yrs ago, that might've been the first wot pass like that with the windows up, a/c on. (As crazy as that sounds)

Ain't that the truth, 500 HP Coyote Mustangs can't use WOT long enough on the street without getting into ticket territory and, as much as I believe in the theory there's never enough horsepower, I just don't see how forced induction pony cars over 700 HP can use that kind of power to its full potential with two-wheel -drive. Driving around on drag radials is not my idea of a practical street car. Mid-9 second M3/M4 Competition with simple tune upgrades are practical daily drivers because of AWD, something Ford chose not to develop for Mustang when they canceled the Taurus FWD platform and changed Explorer to a similar rear-drive architecture as Mustang. Ford even benchmarked BMW to study the possibility of a AWD Mustang but they're too cheap to invest in the development resources to pull it off as a production model. (They'd rather outsource unobtainable niche vehicles to Multi-matic.)

I didn't know Ford benchmarked a BMW. What model BMW?

Thankfully not. AWD mustang would probably be packing 4200 lbs. Probably the next gen.

Don't remember the details of what model BMW we investigated but it was during early design stages of the 10R60 and we looked at the possibilities of doing an AWD version of the 10R80 for a Mustang where the front driveshaft would run through the side of the engine block but packaging was too challenging. It was manageable with an in-line 6 but the wider V-8 wasn't practical for a low CG car, especially when all the development money was being funneled to the high volume (and profitable) Explorer program.

Hmm, this is an interesting topic. We had quite a few 100+ degree days here and I drove my M1 around with windows up and A/C on. I drove my normal, spirited self and never once noticed the A/C cutting out or impacting performance. Not that WOT are ever more than a few seconds, but it’s nice to know that the A/C disengages to help with performance. I also agree with the sentiment that 500hp is plenty for a street car. As much as I’d like to supercharge it, I find my M1 to be a super balanced car. At least that’s what I tell myself to avoid the itch.
