Quick update on the Turtle Wax ceramic :

I have got multiple layers on a few panels now and layering really seems to make a difference to the performance of it. Water behaviour seems very good :

It would be interesting to see if it lives up the longevity claims I see on the internet, but with how quick and easy it is to apply additional coats I’m not sure I will get the chance to test that, even over the winter period.

Whilst we are on paint, I mentioned on another thread how good wash technique and equipment was helping to preserve the factory finish (I pulled the factory wrap off the car and it has never had any polishing / paint correction). I posted this picture after turtle waxing the roof as direct reflections of the run straight into the camera lens highlight defects (swirls) rather than hide them :

BBA04-C2-A-23-CC-4-D3-A-B0-BB-FEF551-FA519-E.jpg

That lead to a request for a shot at night using the same technique and an LED torch, I obliged with these :

6-ED9325-C-31-A0-41-EE-8066-F40-D828160-D5.jpg

Note that some dust had settled on the car by that time. Check out shadow black showing off its colours … :sunglasses: :

Moving back to the hood vents and a niggle I had with them letting water between the hood skins – you can see the upper and lower hood skins in this photo when the vents were out (and the amount of crap that can get under them) :

27-D271-D9-7-D99-44-AA-BE0-B-36-FB6077-B2-DA.jpg

You can just see the underside rain tray in that photo that looks like this on the underside of the hood with the hood blanket removed :

C99183-D0-27-AF-4-C81-96-BF-0208-D19-B977-D.jpg

This is the underside of the vent that ‘should’ channel the water down into the plastic rain tray :

1071-A3-FE-FF6-D-4-B06-B160-15750403-DD9-D.jpg

That works fine for light rain, but if the vent is flooded (or in the event of washing the car / jet washing the vents etc) water backs up and then escapes between the hood skins, settling in the front edge over the headlights until it is either steamed off with engine heat or the hood is lifted moving the water to the back corners and out of the drain holes near the hinge  :

That didn’t sit well with me … I considered some front edge drain holes but if / when the hood corrosion issues start I don’t think Ford would have taken to kindly to that modification … lol

I decided on this route :

6-FEDAF47-6-F06-4-B02-A103-3-B3-F22-C479-D4.jpg

And then some Unibond butyl sealant :

B5-A14668-8192-4026-B0-DA-8375492881-E8.jpg

But after five days the Unibond stuff still hadn’t even skinned over, so I dug it all out and cleaned it up with ear cleaners and white spirit (what a pain in the arse ) and then did it again with some 150°C black silicone.

All the edges and holes around the vents were covered in Lanoguard (Fluid Film in the states) along with the studs and mounting nuts. Vents back in – note the lower skin of the hood that you can see in lime :

6-BA8-B2-A3-87-C7-4212-8-C76-4-F42-DF7-D13-C5.jpg

Pre mod, any water that got on top of that lime piece entered the hood skin cavity and didn’t go through the vent to the rain tray.

Torrential rain over the weekend, followed by a wash where I purposely flooded the hood vents with a open ended running hose resulted in a good test :

Happy with that, the replacement hood blanket can now go on :like:

I love this thread even if I wouldn't do 90% of it, better than an awful lot of what is posted on here !
Ditto. Makes mine feel a bit unloved in comparison lol

I aspire to these levels of cosmetic perfection and attention to detail :inlove:

@WD Pro impressive attention to detail as always. I went about this problem a slightly different route by purchasing a cordless leaf blower which I use to clear the water out of the vents. It is also really efficient at getting rid of the water out of the grills, mirro and the alloy wheels.

This is the one I’ve got which is more the up to the task !

I’ve got the Ryobi version of that and with a ceramic coating means you can do a contactless wash. Amazing to watch!

Nope, I wouldn’t pay anything like it’s current price and I didn’t do way back when I bought it (approx 12 years ago).

Here’s what I posted further up this thread : “The wax is pinnacle sovereign paste. It’s not cheap, but I have had it years and paid a lot less than current prices. Before it could be easily sourced in the UK, I jumped in on a mini group buy where a number of tubs were imported and we shared the shipping costs etc”

A little goes a long way, buts it still a ‘special occasion’ only wax … lol

So you’re applying wax on to a ceramic coating ? If so that’s not something that is recommended as it can compromise the efficiency of the ceramic coating hydrophobic layer.

I keep thinking of one of those, the only thing that’s stopped me is that I don’t have a problem with water spotting so it’s rare I actually dry the car off.

I was at stars n stripes at weekend (Tatton Park Cheshire) and a guy had a small hand held one, I was impressed with how well it worked on well prepped paint :sunglasses:

I’m not sure how that would have helped my hood flooding problem though ? The water doesn’t trickle in, in runs freely (or did) and it would be sat between the skins over the headlights before I could put the hose down and grab the blower.

I would be interested to see if others get the same problem or if mine was a one off, maybe missing some between skin sealant ? (It’s not exactly like Ford do a good job with consistency on these cars … lol).

If you turn the volume up on the first video I posted, you can here the water slosh to the back of the hood between the skins when I first lift it

Anyhow, I ran out of time on my lunch to finish my update so here goes :

Sync and maps successfully updated, be it there’s another new version already …

Got BMR style spacers made up in stainless to help the diff mountings out (Ford fitting M14 into M16 clearance …) :

The last piece of the pre delivery warranty work / snagging list is now done :

These are really heavy and awkward to manoeuvre out of the car, remember there’s no headrest to take off giving you extra room :

Online guides said I needed a T50 Torx to remove the seats, nope, not on my 2020 …

BD58-F210-8-A38-4-D67-BA7-A-9-EB2390-A047-E.jpg

One new set of Torx Plus later, this is what’s really needed :

48-C82185-9-C87-4782-B18-A-E1-F085322-A0-F.jpg

The other sizes that’s needed to strip the Recaro down are standard Torx T50, T25 and T20.

All back together now, torqued up and thread locked - hopefully also curing a seat squeak that had slowly been developing.

I think @JOCKO will like this one …

That shitty carpet flap that won’t stay down and gets pulled up every time I move the seat :

Is now sorted with a bit of carbon :

That sits under the existing push pin :

Calm is restored, I will sleep well tonight … :giggle:
