I just joined the leaking evaporator coil club. In Mar 2017 I had a leak in my refrigerant line and one year later I now have a leak in the evaporator coil. Last years repairs cost 680.00 and now I’m told to replace the evaporator coil it will be $1695.00 for parts and labor. This is insane. This is the first vehicle I have owned that has had AC issues.
+1 Only other car that had AC issues was my 89 notchback with 210k miles....which was to be expected.

And now my seat heater just broke. I'm beginning to regret this purchase.

I have my eyes on the Ford Fusion Sport if I have to get rid of the mustang early.

Update on the 2018 Evaporator Core

Turns it there was a plastic shield that is put on to protect and it pinched a hose. The couldn't find a leak last time because all the dyed fluid was caught inside that shield. The service rep said that he was questioned why he special ordered the evaporator core because part number IS different in the 2018 which apparently means they fixed the issue in the 2018's. Keeping my fingers crossed!

The evaporator core design and p/n changed many times on the 15~17 Mustangs, but they still fail ... so don't hold you're breath on the 18s until it's been a few years without any failures.

I've read through most of these and it seems I'm having the same issue with the evaporator core... can anyone recommend a dealer in the Houston area to do this fix correctly?
I'm in Houston too, I saw your post, and did your problem solved? Which dealership or bodyshop you went?

Thanks,

Well, chalk up another victim of Ford's garbage supplier.

My Ecoboost was an early 2016 MY, built in August 2015. My car is daily-driven with ~26.5k miles on it. I'm in Houston, so I run my AC often. I noticed a film would build up on the windshield once in a while over the last several months, but I thought it was something to do with an OEM coating on the interior or the 303 I used on the dash somehow evaporating and possibly reacting with the high humidity, but after reading this thread, I think it matches everyone else's experience. Funny thing is I didn't notice a smell. Yesterday I first noticed it when I had the temp set to 72 and it was still hot as hell. I thought it had to do with sitting in traffic, but when I got up to speed it persisted. Sure enough, the passenger side blows slightly cooler than the driver side.

Time to call the dealer on Monday. Anyone in Houston have a recommendation on a dealer? I bought it from Joe Myers, but it's a bit far. I'm closer to the Galleria.
Did your problem solve? which dealer or body shop you used? I just joined Evaporator Core replacement club... I lived near city center

Thanks,

Sounds like the evap core to me too. If the dealership is fighting you on it to avoid installing a new core, maybe try another dealership.

I'm on my third evap core and my dealership hasn't given me any resistance to replacing them yet. This issue is already a big enough pain to also have to deal with a dealership not willing to address the issue.

Good luck.

Edit: Nice Les Paul, btw.
I live in Houston and my AC went out yesterday... I am out of warranty now...

Got my car back. It took a day and a half. No squeaks or rattles and I can’t tell what they pulled to do the job. They used fr3z19850w. Is that the newest evaporator available? Has anyone had one of them leak?

Looks like I'm the latest in line for this issue... except I bought my mustang a year ago 1.5 years old and 3k miles within warranty.

Now I'm out of warranty @ 42k miles and my AC has failed....

Classic case of driver side goes warm, passenger size still cool, fails over a period of 24 hours.

I had it recharged at a third party specialist with dye here in Houston and it leaked out within 24 hours of recharge, so I'm taking it back tomorrow to find the leaks

I highly suspect reading the previous it's the evaporator core and since I'm well out of warranty, I'm expecting replacement costs of 1300 (third party repair) to 2800 (Ford repair)

My plan is to confirm the evaporator core is indeed at fault and first discuss with my dealership on a what an out of warranty fix will cost in terms of time and money.

Next it's getting quotes for third party fixes.

I'll keep you updated on progress inc timing for repair, costs and process.

Car: Mustang 2015 Convertable Premium @ 42k miles.
Hi, I live in Houston too and my AC died yesterday... I'm out of warranty too, how did you fix your problem?

How long until there is a class action?
Has Ford bought back any car, honored an expired warranty, or extended the warranty at no cost for any S550's with multiple a/c repairs and failures? It should do all.

Are there any such cases or anecdotes out there?

Someone has to start it and no one has stepped up to the plate... I mean some of the replies in this very thread have had upwards of (3) replacements! You’d be damned skippy if it were my vehicle that had 2, let alone (3) evap cores replacements, I’d be on the phone with Ford demanding a Buy Back.

The problem is, if warranty has expired, most folks don’t have $1,700.00 laying around to get their vehicle A/C working - let alone the other half that wants to buy an extended warranty, but also does not have $1k+ laying around to poke out “just in case”....

If someone has completed a Buy Back for a redundant EVAP core failure, it has not been posted in this thread... maybe they posted it in the Lemon Law thread in the TSB sub forum on here,

Also to note, if some of you are fed up and going on your 2nd evap core... you’re losing time to do a Lemon claim or Buy Back, especially more so the 2015/2016 owners...

I think 1 member posted in this thread he was able to get Ford to eat the cost, since his failure occurred just after his warranty expired, but those lucky ones are few and far between...

I was a few thousand outside warranty and they told me to take a flying jump. Another guy on here had his claim denied 1 week outside of warranty.

The big issue here is Ford can get away with shitty customer service since sales of their trucks probably cover their entire operating costs each year. So every other car sold is pure profit and they have no need or desire to act in good faith to keep customers.

There was a couple of guys on here that got their evap core replaced for free when they were just over warranty.

The class action will happen as more cars from the north age. They don't use their ACs year round, thus their evaps have "longer" lifespan. Which also means that they'll be the ones who get the full repair bill as they'll be past the warranty period.

Yeah, this is exactly what I am worried about...
