Hello everyone,

I have been looking into getting into a gen 3 manual for some time now. I love the cars and always enjoy driving my friends.

I have tried to do a lot of research regarding the longevity of the mt-82 because I know there is a lot of mixed reviews about it.

My question is regarding the 2019, from what I have seen after the mt82-d4 came into play with the 2018 year they had a lot of issues regarding shift forks that caused multiple TSB's, from what I have seen it appears that some early 2019s had the problems as well but were resolved by the 2020 year. I know that the longevity of the manual in these cars is questionable as a whole regardless of the year but I wanted to get opinions from people about whether or not to stay away from the 2019 year completely or not. I am ruling out the 2018 year as it is the one that I know had many many issues, but from the 4 TSB's I saw, all 4 were for the 2018 year and only one of them included the 2019 year.

Should I rule out the 2019 year completely like I am with 2018? From the research I have done it seems like the issues with the new transmission were 90% resolved by 2019 and ironed out completely by 2020, at least regarding the TSB's that were issued. But I know that feedback coming from people who actually own and drive these cars everyday will always be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I have a 2019 and when I pulled my tranny to upgrade the internals, I found that it had cast aluminum shift forks. I’ve since added billet aluminum 1/2 and 3/4 shift forks, but reused the cast 5/6 and reverse shift forks, as no one offered billet ones for those at the time. I can also confirm that the reverse shift forks pads were made of black plastic and all other shift forks had white (non serviceable) shift pads.

no issues with the D4 variant refresh - Matter of fact, I find it to be legitimately better from the 15-17.

Can't shift quickly but power shift is much feasible.

Slow and easy shifts will allow the D4 to live a long and healthy life. Start racing and shifting quick at high rpm and you’re asking for trouble.

My '18 is a late '17 build on E85 that I don't hesitate to redline when I can and it hasn't had a single problem with any part of the driveline. Just cracked 40k miles.

Maybe my 45 years of driving all manner of manual transmissions has something to do with it 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have a 2018 that I bought as a Ford CPO in 2020 with ~27k on it, and it's currently coming up on 45k. Not a single transmission issue. I just changed the fluid to Motul DCTF as preventative/regular maintenance and it's fine. Never missed a shift, no lockouts, etc.
