I had a similar panic stop recently, but it wasnt an old lady it was a yellow turning ‘orange’ light at a wide right corner which I fully intended to run before the Officer in the marked police car pulled up to the interection at the last moment.

Hard brake, ABS and tire screetch, followed by the (justified) stink eye from the officer as his light turned green and he pulled away.

I had a similar experience a couple of months ago where someone in control of a car messed up but got so scared they froze behind the wheel with their eyes huge and staring.

I was walking one of our family dogs and crossing a major city street in the crosswalk with a positive pedestrian crossing signal. As I was crossing west to east, a woman launched her SUV out of the oncoming east-to-west left turn lane at heavy throttle. She swung around the 90 degree turn and ended coming straight at me and the pet in the crosswalk. I waved my arms but the big eyes and frozen face made it clear she was transfixed, so I jumped back and she flew by.

You were lucky.
SUV operators (besides the BMW and Mercedes) people have elevated the threat level on our streets. The dimwit young kids driving mom&dads $65k+ cars, 3/4 and 1 ton pick up truck drivers, soccer moms in a big rush driving their Suburbans and construction trucks pulling skid steers running red lights are on the roll.

like you glad I’m driving my ‘17 GT/CS. Not a GT 350 but better than?

Be safe out there.

Lucky!
Seems all the SUV and pick up truck operators are a major threat now days also. Their bullying tailgating is becoming out of hand.

What other vehicles are there anymore?

Hard to find a maker that even makes a car and more difficult is finding a maker that makes a car with a manual. Everyone wants the big SUV or truck.

After riding motorcycles for years, I have found that when the other party is looking right at you, they don't even see you, they are looking past you. I will either flash the high beams or swerve back and forth and then they react. You can tell that even though it looks like they see you. They don't! That is hard to do when reaction is the only thing between you and crunch time. Good job.

I bet you it’s the pads. I have Cobalt xr1 on the front of my track car (17pp) and i have to recalibrate my foot on the street driving to and from the track. Almost scary on the street
I have GLOC R8 and R10 on my PP1 GT, and I know what you are talking about. They do make a big difference, they bite really hard and initial bite is stronger than street pads. Only light pedal pressure is ever needed. You can easily get to threshold braking without a lot of pedal effort.

The GT350 brakes are quicker, don't bite as hard and are a lot easier to modulate. I think the gaps between the pads and rotor might be smaller. Like I said, I don't know why, but GT350 brakes have stellar feel and functionality. It's not just pads as far as I can tell.

At the risk of being pedantic, the size of your brake rotors and number of pistons probably didn't have much effect on your stopping distance here... They're great for the track to prevent overheating your brakes, but in a single emergency stop on the street, tires get the vast majority of the credit for stopping distance (that and the weight of your car).

... Although the quick initial bite on these massive brake systems does possibly help them reach max friction a little bit more quickly. Arguably enough to save you just the couple of feet you may have needed to not crash here.

Well stated. That's 100% what I was trying to say as well. You can feel that the brakes engage more quickly, but it's a very small difference. It's possible the difference is not even measurable and the sole benefit is driver enjoyment. But the GT350 brakes are truly awesome to use.

Quicker brake engagement, grippier pads, ABS activation and strong rotor compound all contribute to stopping distance reduction. And it looked like 3 feet saved a major collision. A split second activation in grip is huge. Glad you, your car and the offending lady are all in good shape. Well done!

When I went to Track Attack they tried to teach " threshold braking" you're trying to use all the braking force available without locking the wheels. At Ron Fellows in the C8 it was stomp on the pedal and let ABS do its thing. Still don't have a clear answer as to what provides the shortest stopping distance.

I'd be shocked if any but the most elite drivers can out brake ABS. I'd rather try to threshold brake, though. I think it's more fun. If my laps are slightly slower, I don't care.
