To not have a Ford in it this is the best car video I've seen in a while.

I said it before when the GTD was yet to post a 'ring time, that the ZR1 would whoop it handily. and it does across all metrics. GM simply hit a grand slam with the car.

Then they went one better with the ZR1X and basically created the best sports car ever - while costing a fraction of what its competition costs - unloading the GTD unfortunately.

Never liked GM. But dang. the C8 is such a great platform. Wish Ford cared about the Mustang like that.

Seriously… as much as it pains me to say this as a lifelong Ford guy, if Ford really wants the Mustang to go toe-to-toe with what Chevy is doing right now, they need to swing for the fences.

Imagine this for a second: a twin-turbo Coyote variant designed from the ground up to live as a TT engine, stuffed into a GT-esque body—maybe even on a lightweight aluminum chassis to keep costs in check. Pair that with both RWD and an AWD/electric assist option, similar to what Chevy is doing with the newer C8 variants, and suddenly we’ve got a real heavyweight fight on our hands.

Because right now… as much as my blue-oval heart hates typing this… the Mustang and the newer C8 lineup—Grand Sport, Grand Sport X, ZR1/ZR1X—aren’t really playing the same game. Chevy brought a railgun to a fistfight while we’re still arguing about tire compounds and exhaust notes.

Don’t get me wrong—I bleed Ford. The Voodoo is one of the greatest engines ever built and the GT350 is still one of the most emotional cars Ford has ever made. But man… if Ford unleashed a purpose-built TT Coyote halo car, the entire performance world would lose its mind overnight.

A Ford guy can dream, right?

Ford priced a supercharged coyote at a starting price of 103k and their 400k ultimate mustang gets clapped by a 200k Vette. Im not sure they're capable of producing what you say, TBH.

Would love to see it, tho

To be fair, no chance that $200k Vette is 200k at the dealership if you or I went.

Honestly these guys have priced most Americans out of the top of the line versions of these cars. By a silly amount. I appreciate the engineering, and what GM did designing a platform that works across 480 HP to 1200, potentially more, and diffusing that cost across the entire C8 platform. But no everyday American can afford it. Same goes for the GTD, minus the cunning engineering.

It's sad. Particularly the bold. As I said in a different thread, it's almost like they don't care if they kill the Mustang nameplate anymore.

Who cares, you can't do a darn thing on the street with the Vette, GTD, GT500, or DHSC other than go super fast in a straight line which is about as exciting as watching grass grow after a few weeks. I'm not kidding, how is anyone in their right mind going to come close to using any of these cars to their maximum capabilities on the street or rural roads? You can't. I can't. Or did everyone turn into a professional race driver when I looked left? It is all just numbers which are ultimately meaningless in the age we currently live in. Velocity and acceleration are everywhere.

It's cool they exist, but none of these do anything for me that I can't already do on my back rural roads with a car that's a fraction of the price. They won't make that experience any more fun. It is just bragging rights unless you're on track pushing that thing to ten out of ten. Would it be cool as you know what to have a GTD? Yup. Its slow car fast, that's where its at in the twistys for mere mortals such as myself.

However, also me right after getting a GTD:

‘the crazy part is Ford has the best turbo tech around as well as the best bottom end engineering to handle it.

it’s all boardroom choice. They need to get some testosterone back into leadership at Ford. This era just sucks. Get Mulally back. Pay him whatever he wants. Do SOMETHING… almost anything other than you’re doing now for the love of all that is holy.

My 2 cents . . .

In my opinion, Ford hit a home run with the S550 and is dressing it up in every way imaginable to maximize the return (yes, this includes the S650, and other iterations). On the other hand, Chevy is truly innovating with the Z06 and ZR1. As high end Mustangs get priced into Corvette territory, Chevy becomes a real competitor . . . .

I just pulled the trigger on a 2026 C8 Z06. I considered a GT350, and almost bit, but after a test drive, found it was a little too loud and unhinged for my liking, and I had some lingering concerns about engine bricking, without great options in that scenario. That said, it is an epic automobile, and has an undeniable road presence. Kudos to anyone who has one -- fabulous choice.

In comparison to the GT350, the flat plane crank on the Z06 seems to be part of a much more robust platform, as evidenced by the ability to slap on twin turbochargers to become the ZR1 (acknowledging some additional engine bolstering, but still . . . ).

Now I have to agree with lo-fi, that from a strictly driver engagement and enjoyability factor, my 2017 Mustang GT performance pack has been impossible to beat thus far. I have no plans to sell or trade outside the family, and I strongly suspect it will remain my favorite car. The engagement with a manual transmission (especially the crappy MT-82, which takes extra skill to master) and the short gearing is insanely additive -- put on 50K miles on in about 2 years after buying it used . . .

The Z06 will be fun to try and master -- I expect to be a very different driving experience, but will it stay long term? We will see after it arrives . . . . (en route from MacMulkin, which I highly recommend to anyone considering this).
