Changed my oil and washed the car today.

I noticed on my first oil change done by Ford the oil filter was leaking and was loose.

Second oil change I did, I put the filter on dry per Ford recommendation for our Mach 1s(there is still tiny amount of oil dripping on surface so it’s not completely dry). Noticed today that bitch was on there super tight.

In conclusion, maybe putting the filter on dry stops it from backing out? OR and the most likely scenario the Ford tech was incompetent

Also I replace the plastic drain plug every oil change, might as well cheap insurance.

What are your thoughts? I am curious if any of you that lube up the filter end up with a loose filter?

Is that the first car that you ever changed a filter ?

WHAT!! No Pal I was a tech back in the day and always done my oil changes. Go back and read what i said.

Its always been common practice to lube it, but FOR THE MACH 1 says to put on dry.

My point exactly, what is different with the m1 that would require a different technique?
I bet you that it is ford covering their a$$
What is the recommended torque per ford ?

Yep, it is strange to me. Why only the Mach 1.

My 2019 Ford Service Manual notes to put it on dry. After many years of changing oil and filters it just seems wrong but I did it last time and all was well (there is plenty of oil dripping from the filter seating surface anyway).
I was told (before the internet) the oil swells the rubber seal and helps to keep the filter tight.

I have never lubed my filter ever on any of my vehicles in the last 15 years of doing my own oil changes (7 vehicles, roughly 670,000 miles). I've also never had an oil leak from any of them. Hmmm...

Have done one oil change on my Mach 1 and dry. Next one is up in the spring and I'll be curious to see how hard it'll be to get her off. My Bullitt did not require that but if I remember right, the Mach 1 has the GT350 oil filter adapter (god knows why), so that could indicate Ford is trying to cover their rear.

IIRC, the 'dry' instruction relates to NOT filling the filter with oil AKA 'dry' before installation, and NOT related to not schmearng the gasket with a thin layer of oil. I've never had a filter I installed come loose. Hand tighten then 1/4 more with filter wrench. Always coat gasket with oil.

I’ve done two changes on my ‘21 Mach since I brought it home new. 1st time was at 7mo/4750mi. 2nd one at 20 mo/10,850mi. I only drive the car April through October.

I do apply a thin layer of fresh oil by finger tip to the filter seal before installing. Hand tightening it to 3/4 turn beyond initial contact of the seal to the machined sealing surface (which I wipe dry beforehand).

I haven’t seen any leakage to date. I do not track the car, but don’t baby it driving either…

You have many different gasket materials and shape. Some have a wide and flat contact area and some are rounded and narrow
Some are made of synthetic rubber and some of silicone
Some require hand tight and some ( motorcycles come to mind) require 2 full turns after contact
Mounted completely dry, the wide and flat type had an habit to stick to the oil filter adapter when the filter is removed
Anyhow, common sense and the right torque for the type of gasket will go a long way to insure a trouble free installation

You are incorrect

Gezzz I am not disagreeing with adding oil on the gasket I have always done it.

I only remember my gt350's oil filter having issues due to vibration so not sure why this would be an issue on the gt's or mach 1's.

I use to mark with a perm marker just to keep an eye on it.
