6v? 12v? Does it matter?
Also if I disconnect the battery do I still need the battery tender or would it be ok?
Buy the 12v obviously.
You will be okay if you disconnect the battery but every time you do that, the engine ECU will need to relearn all the parameters so it's up to you.

Any of the better chargers will "see" whether you have a 6 or 12 volt battery connected and adjust accordingly. You can leave either of the following on all winter. The tender you get should also be compatible with either a "flooded cell" or "dry cell" battery. The flooded cell battery is the one you refill with distilled water.

or

http://www.costco.com/Battery-Tender-Power-Plus-3-Amp-Charger.product.100241973.html

Either one will recharge a dead battery, but it will take days and days. The CostCo 3 amp would charge marginally quicker.

I have the CostCo one. My son had the NOCO one, until the dogs chewed it up.

Battery minders...

Don't put a 'trickle charger' on for long term maintenance. Even the 'float' mode can eventually evaporate out the water in the battery. Computer-controlled battery minders are smart enough to prevent loss of fluid and many have de-sulfation to prevent coating of the plates.
I used a DelTran Battery Minder this last winter. Four months in storage...convertible started with the first touch of the start button. All electronics worked perfectly. My battery minder has the 'desulfation' feature.

I've had this brand on my 1994 Cobra for 8 yrs now - and it's on my Optima Red Top, which is at least 10 years old...

http://www.batteryminders.com

I've never once had any issues with the unit and it maintains the battery flawlessly. I remove both battery cables, hook the unit's cables up to my battery and just lower the hood just enough so it is open very slightly. The Battery Minder stays hooked up 24/7, until I take the car out to shows or nice day drives - then it goes right back on after bringing car home.

How did you hook up the positive side of quick connect cable to the battery? Did you change positive battery cable?

Deltran Battery Tender Plus: 021-0128

I am not sure if it is the best, but I hooked this up to my GT back in November and just took it off today for the first drive of the year. She fired right up!

I used the quick disconnect attachment instead of the clamps. Easy plug and play from here on out. Good Luck!

re-opening this thread 😅
Does anyone can say if the “Ford Performance Smart Battery Charger and Maintainer 5.0” is good enough for a GT350?
Thanks boys!

Whatever brand you buy make sure it's an automatic on and off. You need a charger that shuts off when the battery is charged. Even a one or two amp charger will cook the battery to death over time if it doesn't shut down.

30 + years battery tender, never have had that happen. So I say not so, if anything it extended the life.

Where is the best place to permanently hook up the + lead of a tender? I see you can connect the - lead to the - cable but no spot for the +.

For a permanent connection, like this: https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/th...to-your-s550-mustang-today.11109/post-3087711

However you connect it, just make sure you use the chassis for the negative connection and not the -(Neg) terminal on the battery. That way the Battery Management System will still monitor the battery state.

Thank you very much. Now I just need to get a new cable for my NoCo genius5 which I neglected to remove from my 2013 when I sold it in Aug.

Does it matter how many amps it is if your just using it to maintain?

Lower amps means the charging process will take a longer time. Some articles I have read and friends with a good knowledge in this say that slower charging time are better that faster. You need to check the Ah capacity, but the main features that your charger/maintainer must meet are:
Short-Circuit: ✔
Open-Circuit: ✔
Overheating: ✔
Overcharge: ✔
Spark-Proof: ✔
Reverse Polarity:✔
