The locking nuts shown in the picture above are an utter crap. Sooner or later (actually, rather sooner than later) the key will break, and you'll be left with four wheel nuts you won't be able to remove. And Ford won't be able to supply a new matching key.
Don't ask me how I know.
There are good locking nuts out there, but this particular design isn't among them.
What did you do when that happened?

They are honestly not that hard to defeat. The easiest way is to get a socket that is just slightly smaller than the lock lug and drive it on with a hammer then just use the socket to take it off. Alternately you can weld a nut to the lock and use that. Do a YouTube search, there are several videos on how to. Most lock lugs are fairly easily defeated. The set i linked included. But with that set you have to defeat all 20 instead of just one per wheel.
There is a company that will guarantee to replace your wheels and tires up to several thousand dollars should their locks be defeated. They are like $500 per set and there are some pretty serious requirements that must be met for the warranty to be valid. Things like only an authorized shop can install and uninstall them. Also your key is in a sealed bag and if you have to use it for a flat you have to send the key back to the company to be revealed. If the wheels are stolen and the seal is broken your warranty is void.

No, Ford won't give you a matching key but you can order one from McGard with the code number that came in the bag they were shipped in.

First I went to the local dealership and asked them for a replacement key. They said: no can do, these locking nut sets are not linked to your VIN and do not have a code. But they agreed to try and remove them. I think they welded a nut to the lock and used that. Then I replaced them with normal nuts.

The problem is, you see the star-like groove in the nut, which is unique to each set, and which is actually what makes it a locking nut? The key has the same pattern in reverse, i.e. an internal "wall" - for lack of a better word - of the same shape. This wall is very thin. As thin as the groove in the nut, obviously. When you loosen or tighten the nut, this thin, wavy wall takes all the force. And it can only take it so many times before it breaks.
It's really a very fragile design.

No, I had the type in the picture on my mk4 Mondeo.
On the Mustang I got a different type, which at first glance seemed to be a little sturdier.

But I got rid of them anyway, as I found them ugly. I don't really need locking nuts. Nobody steals wheels around here these days. I've got some nice, non-locking Gorillas, which will outlive the car. :sunglasses:

oh crap. Thanks to this thread I just realized I do not remember receiving a key for locking nuts whatsoever. Gotta call them on Monday.

I don't know what ford does today. All my older fords that I have owned that came with factory wheel locks, had a 1"x3" white tag on a ring with the lug wrench, the tag had a scan bar code. I was told that this was the tag you had scanned to get a replacement key. Was told this by a Ford parts counter employee, when I asked what it was, while he was looking up some other part I needed. Both Merc's and my F-150 had these tags.
I put them in the owners manual. I never had to replace the lock keys, So I have not used that scan code to get a replacement, So take it for what it is worth.
I don't know who makes/supplies Ford with the locks, but they look like macguard, or maybe a copy of them. I know with that brand you are not to use an impact on the key and nuts.
I knock on wood, have not broken a key (yet). I do put a little ARP lube on that lug stud before I put the locking nut on.
Today with battery powered tools, the locking lug nuts only slow them down. Like most things, Keys and locks are for honest people.
A Friend has HRE wheels on his toy, and those wheels are not cheap. He has 3 different sized lug nuts on the car, so if someone tries to take them, they will need a bunch of sockets, and a way to get the locks off. Didn''t really help, they took the whole car. But when the car was recovered the wheels were still on it.

That's not a good idea. It messes up your torque reading. The torque specification is for clean, dry studs and nuts.
Well, when my head studs and nuts back off from using it, (not likely) I will rethink this. ARP has a chart to go from a dry to a torque spec when using the lube.
I have yet to have a locking lug nut, back off it's torque spec after a recheck after a few heat cycles, and I haven't broken any locking lug nuts or the keys. Still at 75ft lb at time of rotation 5 thousand miles after the re-torque. (note the arp lube is only used on the locking lug nut) I use anti sez on the wheel mounting flange and centering hole and never have to hammer off a stuck wheel that corrosion has welded the wheel back to the axle hub/rotor. just don't use this stuff on the stud threads.
They salt the roads here. not so much an issue with a warm weather car like a mustang, but the year round vehicles. it makes a HUGE difference.

Yeah, I got the same type as you but I made covers for them with a chopped down silicon nut cover :

Agree, that lame design was first seen in the late 60's. Cannot believe it is still around, Goes to show you, the more things change the more they stay the same.
All for 400 bucks, hurry before they are all gone LMAO

IMO and I don't use locks, the spline design, that requires a matching socket . Would be the way to go, a better over all design.

Is this the Mustang you're talking about here? If so why are you only torqueing to half the Ford spec of 150ft lbs?
