if they were reporting, or usage and habits were the cause of increse, i wouldnt be able to afford this car
This is how I feel. There is zero proof that Ford is in bed with insurance companies. One guy on here saw something change in his rates that is more likely coincidence than anything else.

They are without a doubt collecting data to monitor how things are working, that they will use in house.

If they sell data, I would be willing to bet it had nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

I do not take my car, or any of my pervious cars to the track. I am not a slow driver. I have more fun than I care to admit, and I have my whole life. There is no way in hell my insurance rates are decided by my driving habits (other than moving violations).

I get it, nobody wants to be spied on. If someone finds out how to correct data collecting on our cars, and its easy, I will do it for the same reason that I will never own a Google device. Just because. The two biggest spies I can think of is Google, and Android.

I was told this on the phone by ford that they do. Jamie, call 800 392 3673. At the prompt say Ford Pass. Tell them that you want to opt out, but by all means, go ahead and ask for yourself.

They specifically said that Ford sells a persons driving habits to insurance companies? This does not sound like it could be plausible as far as determining rates, because there is zero way for ANYONE to decipher WHO is driving the car. My insurance rates suck because I live in MA, but they are not more expensive than the average MA driver.

As I said Tom, I get it. I give you kudos for attempting to sever the umbilical cord, really I do. I am a subscriber to your quest, and a participant as well, once it's figured out. I am just not gonna loos a minutes sleep over it.

They said that if opted in they share your driving habits with insurance companies. Do you know if you are opted in or out? She said most people like being opted in because it can lower their rates.

I was opted in. She opted me out per my request.

I don't recall ever opting into anything.

Did you notice what I posted in Tob's thread, that my car hasn't updated to Etis since February?

No, I missed that. I wonder why? Maybe your modem went bad? I mean things break, right? Who knows.

I can't think of an easier way than the couple of minutes it takes to pull the fuse, unless you need the TCU for your own purposes. In which case, to me it seems the only way would be to somehow block some communications and allow others - a firewall of sorts, and that sounds like a hilariously difficult proposition, unfortunately.

Because we don't read.

And even if we did, a lot of the language could use a lawyer's mind for clarification anyway. The wording is sometimes vague, uses odd definitions that mean something different from vernacular, or is even purposeful misleading by stating that it includes something rather benign but leaves out other heavy hitters.

Somewhere in the paperwork when we bought our cars. Somewhere in the TOS of FordPass.

So, on my car there's an option under connectivity that is called "insurance related data", but its grayed out. I have a base radio and a job1 antenna. October 19 build date. So far I haven't seen any evidence of a rate increase, but I guess I will find out soon. I suspect though that on some cars and in some circumstances that the option works and is checked by default. Maybe with the 8 inch screen its on by default? There has to be more to this than just the TCU. But it makes sense that Ford has to have you opt in before your insurance company can see the data, they would get in trouble otherwise. Its the same type of program as the OBD plug ins that the major carriers push on you to "lower your rates". I remember when those first came out and companies promised the data wouldn't hurt you, and now here we are, lol. I drive perfectly fine in traffic but at night on the open road? Triple digits aren't a rarity. We buy these to have fun.

@kilobravo were you able to confirm this? Read the thread, but didn't see an answer. Thanks.
Cab: Tested the car again tonight, just because. Phone was in the car with WiFi and BT off, cellular on. According to Sync, no phone was connected.

But, FordPass seemed to see the vehicle and I could refresh the display and it would change from "x Minutes ago" to "Just Now."

What I'd like to try is have someone else drive the car while I keep possession of the phone and then see what FP does. Either the car or the phone is phoning home to Ford and to me it seems like it has to be the car.

I give up.

And Jaime, if your comment was in response to something I said about insurance companies being in bed with the manufacturers, I only meant that both have the bottom line as Job 1 and will do anything within the bounds of the law to minimize the hit on their bank accounts. It's just business to them and often, if ethics get in the way, more verbose wordage is the answer.

I know that many states have enacted pretty strict privacy laws for the EDR data which is a good thing but I still don't like it any more than I liked cockpit voice recorders.

@kilobravo for fun can you turn off your home Wi-Fi and try updating status in FordPass? If it still phones home, you have not powered down your TCU. Wrong fuse maybe?

That is plain scary. Were you logged into Ford Pass even though it was not connected to Sync? Would also be interesting to see what happens if you're away from the house--i.e., no wifi.

Jamie, you don't track your car. Folks that do, or even drive fast are getting insurance rate hikes because the driving data is being shared with insurance companies. I doubt you drive like a little old lady. When your insurance goes up for no reason, now you know why.
Is this for GT350 and GT500 only ?
or for GT as well
