The coefficient thermal expansion of engine oil is about 0.0007/K. Assuming a starting temperature of 20°C and an operating temp of 90°C it would roughly be a 5% increase in volume, equivalent of half a quart.

Not enough for me to worry about.
Thanks for the science, but yes, this is the point I was trying to make. However, read this thread (and others) and you’ll find people loose their minds over 1/2 a quarter. Almost as comical as the filter topic that’s currently running.

I agree with all you said. I also get a laugh about those who lose sleep over adding a quart of 10-30 to the 9 quarts of 10-20. "Will it void my warranty?"

No. Check the oil shortly after a hot shut down. Theory is, 10 quarts is enough quantity that expansion will cause a difference in reading on the stick. And it does. Cold should/will read lower.

Having said that...and I've said this before...When you debate, and sweat, and lose sleep over the difference of a mm or two on the dipstick...remember...you are sweating over ounces! Single digit ounces! In a 2 and a 1/2 gallon oil system!
Well, on my 2016 a cold start reads higher and is more accurate than 15 minutes after shut down. We will just disagree on this issue. A morning cold start gives me an accurate reading.

Lol. People are getting stressed because the dip stick tube design creates wildly drastic oil level readings on a $20k engine. Laugh if you want, but I thank God you don't work on my Shelby.

hahahah...it is funny...but no hard feelings. Can you define "wildly drastic"? That's those single digit ounces we're talking about. Didn't know my opinion over 1/8 quart of oil, and the entertaining complaints on how "challenging" it is to read this dipstick was a direct link to my wrench turning capabilities, but good to know.

VooDoo Low tension piston rings are a bitch to get to seal up on super slippery full syn oil.
I'm not sure about that. I have no problem with mine. I broke it in properly, and I see no signs of it burning/losing oil Maybe 1/2qt in 5K miles. But then again, I was OCD about making sure it was done right.

Ford did a huge disservice to its GT350 customers by not breaking in the VooDoo at the dealer level with strict guidelines.
That I agree with. Most people don't have the patience to do it right. They just want to get in the car, and go WOT.

My oil dip stick read full (halfway between the 2 holes on the stick) before start up for a drive this morning. I checked it about one hour after shut down and the stick had a little oil showing below the bottom hole. This is the only car I have ever had that had a dip stick so hard to get accurate readings. Based on my experience with the car, I know that the oil level on the dip stick will keep rising towards "full" as the day progresses and the car sits and cools down. That is why I check the oil in the morning. I think our overhead cam engines need more time for the oil to drain into the pan than overhead valve engines, but I never had problems with dip stick readings for my '96 SVT Cobra, '99 SVT Cobra, or my '04 SVT Cobra, all overhead cam engines. Thought I was burning a lot of oil before I figured this out, but now it looks like I am only burning a quart every 1,500 miles or so. So, you can make light of people trying to get accurate readings regarding their oil level, but considering how expensive these engines are to replace, I don't see the humor. All this might relate to the regulation changing the dip stick tube design?

I use around two quarts a year between oil changes and that’s at 5,000 miles per year.
I planned it that way because the oil I use comes in 12 quart cases.

Good to hear this.
It really shouldn’t be an OCD situation.
Then again I’m the skeptic that believes the oil in the pan from Ford’s assembly plant isn’t exactly what is printed in the operators manual. I think folks that jump the gun and prematurely drain the factory fill are causing break in issues.

My first 18 was using 1 quart per 125 miles when I had the engine replaced. I had to do two 500 mile usage tests and they did a compression and leak down test before it got approved for replacement. And yes it was broken in properly per the instructions in the manual.

Pretty sure like all modern engines if ovefill

The oil in the new car pan is absolutely not what's printed in the manual.

Its is a special formulation break in oil so rinks and other parts seat quickly. This is for every new car and brand.
You’re the Pennzoil salesperson from yesterdays 5W-30 Full Syn break in thread, correct ?

Sharing my Pennzoil uni learning....dont listen to me though I run brand new cars to limiter frequently right off the lot.
How you drive is your business (LOL) I’m interested in your knowledge of factory fill oil.
You have my attention. You’re the first person to confirm my suspicions regarding factory fill oil.

He probably dumped it at Carmax or Vroom
Any day now owner #6 will be along to ask about their new Vroom-purchased GT350 that consumes oil at a rate of 1 qt every 200 miles 🤔
