Can confirm mine got snapped causing a 2wk delay waiting on replacement. For the price in the US I'd be ordering a new one before starting the work.
I purchased an entire daily driver before doing the vvt solenoids because I was convinced the project was doomed. It was actually done in 2 days after work…

"The amount of car that has to not be in the car" is the best, most hilarious way to put it, lol. I replaced a turbo on a friend's truck, using the service manual. Yup, the amount is appalling! Tedious though it was, every step was necessary or I would have been tearing my hair out...

One of billions of annoying little steps clearly described in the factory service manual.

Would you kindly advise on how to handle the HPFP hard line? What a p.i.t.a. It is

I think I used a crows foot socket on an extension for the annoying side. I guess a stubby wrench would also work probably. The torque spec is pretty low and I’m unhappy I had to do the difficult side by feel.

Oh didnt realize it just connects to the fuel rail. I did not see that at first, just saw it going back somewhere behind the engine

Thank you so much what a hassle to get that…

What are these two papers for in the smaller solenoid packages?

Thank you everybody for the responses to my post on this, I plan to do one final test/diagnostic to confirm the solenoid is my issue this weekend before I move forward with the repair in the next few weeks. I would like to get the car back in operating condition before the nice weather in the spring comes back out.

If I come across any other tips or information in my replacement I will be sure to add it to this thread for all to see.

I finished this project in about 8 hours, these are my tips summarized:

the drivers side is very straight-forward and easy, just unplug the wiring harness anywhere and tie it out of the way. Passenger side you have to do some work. The hardest part was removing that HPFP/GDI hard fuel line, but you have to do that to get the cover all the way off and I wanted to so I could replace the gaskets. Definitely have to remove the battery wall to do this. There is a bracket back behind the engine where some wiring connectors mount and the hard fuel line is mounted behind that you have to undo to be able to reach where the fuel line connects to the fuel rail, then you can just get at it with a crow foot which I used an 18mm for a little extra tolerance to get around the nut.

Also, removing the oil dipstick tube, it has a tab to detent then should twist counter-clockwise sorta easily to remove it.

Finally last tip, I got the passenger side wiring harness almost all the way out of the way by carefully undoing the top 2 main harness connectors located right behind the headlight next to/under the fuse box and then was able to route it out from under the A/C line and fold it over the top of the engine. However, when doing this you have to remove a few wiring push pins from a bracket attached to the fuse box, and I absolutely destroyed this bracket because it was brittle and I was being impatient. I am having trouble finding a replacement one, P/N on it says JR3T-14536-AB but this is not returning what I'm looking for.

For what it's worth I just bent the high pressure fuel line up enough to get the passenger side valve cover off . I did it not caring since I had already purchased a replacement high pressure fuel line. I didn't end up using the replacement as the original was fine no kinks and no fuel leaks after the job was completed. Obviously I know that the service manual states to replace this as it considered a one time use , so do at your own risk . Also if I were to completely replace the high pressure fuel line , it would be easier to remove the intake manifold to get to the other side than fighting it like the OP did , just my opinion 😉

Well crap... I have exact same symptoms as the OP. It's random... stumbles... engine died once... now tossing p0022. *sigh* Checked the obvious things off the list. I hope I can find a good indie shop to fix it because I really don't want to mess with a dealer if possible. Don't have the time to do this stuff myself anymore either. Appreciate this post though! At least I have a better idea of the situation. :)

Thanks for the thread and info, y'all. I’m replacing mine.

Wonder where the other chunks of this broken screen got off too? I can’t find it…..

You probably won't unless you're willing to drop the pan which sucks to do
If it’s in the pan or filter, I’m good with it …ish. I’m just hoping it isn’t rattling around the phaser vanes.
