Well that’s not always factual. I don’t know how many chips through my years of glass replacement/repair did I come accesos a chip big enough to impair vision and it was a superficial hit and didn’t make a strong enough impact to be filled. It just chipped the very outer layer of the windshield and was completely unrepeatable the whole windshield had to be replaced.

Edit: to be more specific there has to be either a crack or a pocket on the windshield for the resign to be able to penetrate and be considered a successful repair.
If it's enough to impair vision but not inject resin a good tech can chip it just enough more to inject the resin.

These little bastards are RIGHT in my line of sight, the windshield isn't cracked but its slightly distorted and extremely distracting. Ya think insurance will cover this? seems unsafe and its definitely annoying as shit.

they are not repairable.

Not sure about your insurance but with mine even with the windshield clause I pay for they will not replace the ws unless the crack is bigger than a dollar bill for what you have (chips) they would just repair so that being said you have 2 choices pay out of pocket or “hope” the chip somehow turns into a bigger crack wink wink

In my situation it was a REPAIR at no cost, but it was listed as a claim in the “insurance database” as discovered when I changed carriers. For a windshield REPLACEMENT it would have been a no brainer to use insurance. The cost of the repair vs having a claim on my record was probably not worth using insurance. As stated I guess it varies by state or maybe even insurance company whether it is determined to be a claim or not
To your point - and I hope others would follow your advice too - is that DON'T believe OR take a verbal "word" that a windshield repair or replacement cost will be a "freebie" with no repercussions later.

I would add to the good advice already given by a few M6Gers in this thread:
IF you are in need of a windshield repair OR replacement, and IF you go through your Auto Insurance Carrier - to get their statement IN WRITING that your rates will NOT be jacked at a later date. Unfortunately in today's world, this is the only way one can protect themselves and have proof that what was told was not hearsay later down the road when your rates are jacked.

I know the Auto Insurance laws vary State to State. Yes Insurance Companies provide the declaration pages with each written policy that has tons of fine print (that NO ONE ever reads).... but again, don't rely just in what you think you're covered for OR not covered for or even what's in those pages. When calling about ANY claim, always try to get what was discussed between you and the Agent in writing either by email or standard USPS snail mail.

Also to remember:
Most large Corp Auto Insurance Co's have domestic and international switch boards with people who are LITERALLY following "scripts" AND there's those same people who don't know jack about YOUR insurance policy provisions but will still tell you - "nope, your rates won't go up if you file for this claim". The large "big box" Auto Insurance Co's aren't like some of the Auto Ins. Co's of the past (or those that may remain) in small town USA which were genuine "mom-n-pop" shops that were personable to each and every policy holder.

No you’re wrong but I won’t go back and forth with you. It seems you need to be right regardless.

Good post! I have been in insurance for 25+ years. Insurance does vary from state to state. In my experience not only do most people not read their policies, their agents are typically uninformed also. Your best advocate is you! Read the policy yourself and if you cant determine a clear answer, then write or call for one and ask where this is contained in your policy. Your insurance is a contract between you an the insurer. You have certain responsibilities and obligations as does the carrier.
You can also find out what is considered chargeable incident and what is not. Typically "other than collision" (comprehensive) coverage is not something your rates increase from. Typically! Here in NJ glass coverage is included under comp and the deductible you carry. Other states carry glass coverage as a separate line item under comp, with perhaps a limit on glass coverage or a small deductible also.

Sounds like a good idea. Same reason I didn't call you out earlier for being wrong about legality of what insurance companies can and can't do with glass claims.

i like how the people who haven't repaired glass or had windshields replaced without rates going up are telling those of us that have how all of that works.

I would try to keep the original glass if possible...
I recently had my windshield replaced with OEM. I live in New York and spoke with my insurance (GEICO) beforehand. No deductible or rate change. Should have gotten that in writing as suggested doh!
After the replacement a leak developed on the passenger side, down the a-pillar to the kick panel. The glass shop was able to seal it. Then the same leak developed on the driver's side. Turns out there was evidence that the original windshield was leaking on this side and I didn't know it. Got it sealed and all is good. There's threads on leaking windshields from the factory and after replacement.

well if it leaks they'll just have to do it again.
