Tire Review Recommendations?

By all means, do what suits you and your life best but I would highly recommend watching some YouTube videos on basic maintenance. $250 can get you a jack, jack stands, torque wrench, and a breaker bar. That's all you need to change wheels. And you can fit all of that and 4 wheels/tires in a mustang. I do it every time I go to the track.

I like working on cars but it's also a massive cost savings. I couldn't afford to do what I do as a hobby if I went to a shop for everything

I agree and let me start over.

I don't wanna insult real mechanics because I can only dream of doing what they do. I do all the fluid changes except coolant. So brakes, oils, etc I do. As for mounting tires, I am not sure if it's a good idea using a big crow bar to unseat the tire from the bead.

If your car came with 19 inch wheels even costco should mount 255/40's F and 275/40 rears.

If it came with 18's and the door tag says 235/50-18 then most chains will not mount them. Find a mom and pop service station.

How do I know when I'm ready for better tires?

Ahh yes a question for the ages. You’re ready for better tires when sliding the Indy 500s at speed (with traction control off) doesn’t scare you and doesn’t cause you to loose control. Basically when you’re driving them as fast as they can be driven, then go seek a grippier faster tire.

Alternatively, if another tire costs less to track (possibly due to holding up better to track abuse) and happens to be faster and isn’t intimidating for you to drive at the limit, you should probably upgrade.

most people don’t follow that guideline and just upgrade when their wallets allow or their egos demand a faster tire.

IMHO the Indy 500 is not faster than the MP4S, but its a good value for the money, where the MP4S is kind of a premium price.

i would absolutely run 275/40 on the front if I were you. Firestone isn’t the only tire mounting place in town, find the local autocross or track guys and find out who they use for tire mounting.

275 40 is within the 10% difference specified by costco, so they should mount them on the front also. Talk with the manager, if that dosen'e work call the district mgr.

I can do 275 squared with pp1 wheels? I prefer understeer because I am still a novice.

Costco is very by the book. Try a specific tire shop, like America's Tire or similar. I've taken modded cars to them before without issue.

The local one is useless, but think it depends on which Discount Tire you go to. Local one won't mount tires if the speed rating is 1mph lower than stock, if the load rating is 1 lbs lower, etc etc. They just let the computer decide.

That's dumb. Tire is tire. Just mount it.
