Looking to get a helmet for next year. Plan on doing a few events a year and it doesn’t have to be the cheapest helmet but would like to stay under the $300 mark. What recommendations are there for 2020 rated helmet?

Scorpion exo if new will be the best bang for the buck. You can also find a bunch of ICON helmets under $300

if used, check your local fb marketplace… you can find a nice shoei or arai in good prices

Thanks I wasn’t sure if motorcycle sa2020 helmets were “ok” for events. I know rating wise they pass but was told they aren’t ideal because meant for diff type of impact

HJC H10 is probably under 300 (full MSRP is only 330), and its a proper automotive full face.

Normally though I go to a place that stocks helmets and try a few on. Not everybody's head is the same shape.

I used to have an hjc motorcycle helmet for drag racing years back and fit was good. I’m really seeing in the range I’m looking :
RaceQuip PRO20
G-FORCE Rift
G-FORCE REVO
Zamp RZ-59/56
HJC H10

I like my Bell Sport Mag so far. I'll upgrade to full face eventually, but for casual HPDE it is very comfortable and affordable.
My org does not allow use of motorcycle helmets, guess there is a reason :).

There are 1 or 2 events I’m looking at that do say only sa helmets so leaning that way instead of skipping them

It's a good idea to get sa2020 one, you already spend the money, get the one that is certified properly. Bell Sport Mag is SA certified (just FYI).

I picked up a G-Force Revo this year and works great. Right around the $300 mark depending on where you buy it.

Last year I did exactly what you’re doing; and asked a bunch of other racers for helmet recommendations. I also went down the rabbit hole of endless research on helmets, and thought I had it all figured out.

I bought a HJC H50. Awesome bang for the buck helmet. Excellent features, and loved it. Except it pinched the living crap out of my forehead, despite being the correct size for my head.

After more research and some discussions with Competition Motorsport (the place I bought my helmet) I learned my head shape was more of a long oval versus oval and XL…..only one SA2020 on the market really fit my head correctly. (Stilo ST5)

Read this article, measure your head, and talk to the shop of your choice. Depending on your size and head shape, you may have 20 choices, or 2.

https://nasaspeed.news/tech/safety/the-ultimate-auto-racing-helmet-buyers-guide/

At the end of the day, a SA2020 helmet will be accepted by almost all series and sanctioning organizations for 10 years. And your brain is the one thing they still can’t fix to well if it get broken. Everyone has a budget, but buy the best helmet you can afford that fits you comfortably. (Nothing worse than a long track weekend in an uncomfortable helmet.)
