It's easy to laugh at the poor old Mustang II, but it was the 3rd best selling Mustang generation ever.

Performance was a dirty word and the buying public wanted comfort and good gas mileage. The II kept the Mustang (and Mach 1) legend alive until real performance came back with the Fox.

Be thankful it existed.
I appreciate them. I like to see them at meets. And I know they kept the brand alive. But it would take 2.2 of their 5.0s to match a stock EBs hp, and Pontiac was making a pretty good TA during the same time; it’s too bad Ford couldn’t throw the enthusiasts a bone until the 82 Fox.

Do you ever wonder, though, if the sales were due to it coasting on the reputation of the previous Mustangs? This was again in an era with no internet. Even the Vega was well reviewed when it was initially released....

...a Red one and a Yellow.............

My brother in high school had a 78 Mustang II Cobra V8. Mind you this was in 1981, it had a dual exhaust put on it. It was a pretty cool car when you are 17 years old.

This was like my bros..

I like old fords fun to look at and remember your youth. But not "best" in any way unless in your eyes best looking. Old cars didn't turn, stop or go that well. The 1964 winter nationals was won by my hero a 64 Thunderbolt a bad ass fire breathing race car. It ran 11.78 at 123 mph. (close to what a stock 2021 Mach 1 will run) No 60 or 70 stock car ran under 12.20. I know it was all about the bad tires. A lot of cars in the 70s with slicks and no traction problems only ran in the 14s and 13s, I was one of them.

Amazing how close the FJG 2021 looks to this 1972 Mach 1. Also no hood scoop.
Nice inspiration to draw from while making it modern and so much better in every aspect.
Wonder if in 50 years we'll look back on these photos and think the same about 2071 vs 2021 cars. And if 1972 will look to us like Ford T does now, haha. Hope mine will still be running by then and me too. i have a feeling cars will be much more different, possibly not even needing a driver by then, as well as the world and society itself.

Laugh all you want at the Mustang II, but they're very light and are damn fast with a healthy 302. A buddy had one back in the early '90s and consistently took down some impressive hardware at the strip. He just didn't look as cool as the rest of us.
