I didn't care for the Mustang until the 1969 Mach 1 came out. The 351C, 390, and 428's with 4 spd manuals were the ones I had my eyes on. Of course the 351C was the only one my insurance Co. would let me have. After the 69, I started to loose interest in the Mustang, although I still liked it, until the Mustang II came out. I thought that was the beginning of the end of the Mustang.

This has been my ideal Mustang. The current 2021 Mach 1 HP may be almost tied now.

All those early Mustangs were very slightly modified passenger car chassis' that handled very poorly. Terrible brakes and tires by today's standards.

Noisy, rattle traps.

Today the Mustang has it's own chassis. Other than the name Mustang, there is really no similarity.

Of the 9 Mustangs I have owned, the M 1 is the best.

Pic is from the internet but I had a neighbor in an apartment that had one of these. It was very modified sounding like a turbine at idle. Super mean car and insanely fast!

By today's standards this is true, but I don't remember seeing a 2021 Mach 1 running around in 1972. I had way more fun in my 1970 Challenger than I've had in either of my 2013 or 2019 Mustang GT's, and the Challenger would only get up to 115. It was easier to become one with the machine back then. There were no computers between you and the tires. You learned how to handle the car, and learned how to go fast in it. Noisy? Oh yeah. Rattles? Yeah, but you knew what was rattling or if it was important. Traps? Only if you couldn't keep it under control and couldn't recover in time.

Agreed.

Fun fact: in terms of going for a leisurely drive/cruise, I find my "old junk" to be more fun in general. The old cars never fail to get thumbs up, waves, and comments at lights. My '15, while realistically a better car in every way, is invisible.

I do not miss the eye tearing stink the old cars make though.

Improperly jetted carbs will do that. If they're setup properly, you'll barely smell anything but the occasional whiff of raw fuel.

But agreed that they do stink otherwise, but for me it's part of the appeal.

The driving experience, the feel, is why I picked up a 86 bronco as my daily driver
