Probably made from crappy recycled steel. If you make steel from scratch you can carefully determine its composition. So much steel these days is made from all kinds of recycled material of various grades and compositions, you never know what your gonna get. Just like Forrest said

No doubt there is crappy recycled steel, but "from scratch" steel has to come from iron ore dug out of the ground, with whatever crap is in the rocks with it. It should be easier to refine recycled steel. Now whether they do or not is another story.

Fresh steel is indeed made from iron ore of various grades and adding coke and other materials to get exactly what you want and what the customer requires in their order. Recycled steel is a mix of refrigerators, fenders, rebar, ovens and appliances like washing machines and such. When you simply melt thst all into one mess you get crappy steel. Good iron ore is mostly iron and some traces of nickel and other things.

Just a random datapoint...

Both GT350’s in Carvana have Carfax’s that show engine replacement/buyback due to oil consumption.

Is this what you are seeing? I am posting it below... my understanding is that this is not an engine replacement, but the service bulletin that was sent to all 350 owners on the topic of oil consumption? Can anyone else clarify or confirm?

I got a trade in offer from my dealer in the mail and it included a Carfax. The report listed the program and my engine has NOT been replaced and I never brought it in for oil consumption as the car does NOT use oil. It is disturbing to me if people think this note on a Carfax means the engine was replaced. Talk about concern about resale. Not sure why that program is listed on my report.

I agree dude, I've seen two now posted...certainly on the verge of an epidemic. It'll be more of those than oil consumptions!

Ok..here is the link to the spreadsheet file. There are two Tabs at the bottom, one for A/C issues and one for engine failures/replacement. I will slowly add more info from other forums and possible another tab just for oil consumption.

I only added member info to the spreadsheet if they actually had the problem. I did not include "I heard 5 motors blown at so and so"...these are NOT included.
I assume info on the forums are public. If any member wishes to be omitted from the spreadsheet, please PM me.

If owners with blown engines would also report their engine builders and vehicle build date, I will add that info into the spreadsheet. Not blaming the builders, but trying to create a comprehensive spreedsheet with as much info as possible. These are the data I'm trying to gather:

Mileage when motor issue occurred
Nature of issue
Resolution provided by Ford

I thought recycled steel is smelted and impurities are removed, from what I have read there are two primary methods of creating steel with reclaimed scrap: through an EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) or BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace).

In the EAF process, the raw material is almost entirely scrap steel. High-powered electric arcs quickly melt the material down to liquid crude steel, after which it is refined further in secondary steelmaking processes. Much of the steel used in construction, such as reinforcement bars, steel plates, and structural beams, is made through the EAF process, since the end result produced is incredibly strong.

The BOF process, on the other hand, uses only about 30% recovered steel at most. Here, molten iron is combined with pure oxygen to blow out impurities. The steel produced by this method is used to make industrial drums, pails, cans, refrigerator encasements, and automobile fenders.

I don't believe recycled steel is used for such parts like for and engine internals. I am not a metallurgist nor am I an expert in engine building but I believe that the VooDoo internal engine parts use Forged, high alloy or Carbon steels. cast iron crankshafts and other parts are used only in low end engines, High performance engines use mostly Forged steel parts..

My hometown as a kid, mill just had its BOP plant demolished.....so yes......you take iron ore in a blast furnace then use the BOP process with coke to make steel, you can also add in various other materials to get various compositions......in a arc furnace, you simply place scrap steel in a vat and two electrodes and melt it down.....I suppose you could do some sorting of materials first....but once you melt it all together....and its magma hot molten steel.....I don't think you can refine it much. Its cheap and easy to get scraps and do the melting...so you get cheapo steel. On a side note I'm at 1100 miles now on new engine....and no oil usage. I'll get to 2K then get it changed.

But you would not use recycled steel for performance engine parts, these parts are fordged.
