LMR has a video removing front spring by removing upper mount nut first and relieving spring tension with a floor jack under the lower control arm. Anybody done this? Is it really that easy?

Yeah, it kinda is. I’ve done it a few times and twice this week (with aftermarket coilovers) Just make sure the jack is secure under the knuckle and not on the rotor (which can turn). Do. Not loosen the top bolt until you know the jack is compressing the spring a bit and that its secure and not going to get away from you, then you can zip off the top bolt and gently lower the jack. Presto its free. Reverse to reinstall.

Its worth noting that if you intend to pivot the shock out make sure to unclip the sensor wires and disconnect the endlinks. It wont drop much if the other side is on the ground and the swaybar is keeping it up, and messing up the sensor wire would be a bad thing.

I replaced both of my front springs in <1hr, didn’t even remove the brakes! (I still need to align the toe tho)

That's dangerous. Cause when shit goes sideways, it's at light speed.
Do it properly, remove the strut and use a quality spring compressor.

It’s not dangerous. It’s no more or less dangerous than dicking around with a spring compressor on a workbench. I did the Jack method with the center nut for the first time my last spring install and I will never mess with a spring compressor ever again.

this wont work unless you have short and stiff springs. if you try to do this with stock springs they will expand so far you will not be able to free it and then you will be in trouble. dont ask me how i know.

I relived the spring pressure using the jack method, it wasn’t difficult and didn’t make me nervous. I did have to undo the sway bar links to get enough clearance though. I used a spring compressor to assemble the new struts and spring.

I have been doing this for around 20 years. On many different cars. It works. Its safe. The pressure is completely off the spring way before it can even think of shooting out of there. And it cant shoot out of there cause of the strut body. Undo the sensor before you do this. Undo the sway bar after the spring is loose. It cant go anywhere if the suspension isnt drooped far enough. I have had cars i had to undo the tie rod as well. I have used this to do springs only, strut body only, top mount only, and combos of those things.

I did my drivers side the "safe" way... removed the strut/spring assembled, then used a cheap spring compressor on the bench. I won't ever do it that way again. Such a PITA and didn't feel all that safe. The passenger side, I did the floor jack method. To me the floor jack way was far easier and felt a lot safer.

That's how you remove the rear springs. Put a jack under the lower control arm remove knuckle side bolts and lower rear control arm, so it makes sense to do similar to the front. I've never done the front that way but, good idea. When I use spring compressors I alway lay a heavy moving blanket over the body of the spring in case something decides to break.

Thanks for the replies. I will have the two-piece compressor ready, but maybe try the "jack lowering" method first. I have time to think about it while waiting on my springs.

With lowering springs or gt350r springs this is sufficient.

OSHA hates this one trick.
