Radar/Laser Detector

After stepping up to the GT from my v6 I find myself reaching some speeds that wouldn't look too pretty in the eyes of the law I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with radar detectors/jammers. I live in a state where jammers are legal. I also am not a huge fan of a ton of wires going all over the dash so if possible are there wireless ones or built in detectors. What do you all recommend?

If you get pulled over by a federal agent sure, lol. But no state or local government agency can prosecute you for a federal crime. Pretty sure it has to be illegal in that state for it to be passed up for federal prosecution. So, its perfectly fine in my state.

Radar jammers are illegal but very different from laser jammers.

Correct. Laser jammers are legal in Georgia. Unfortunately, they're not legal in South Carolina. I travel between the two frequently.

What I found about laser jammers is they simply give you enough time to slow down, before they turn themselves off after a few seconds.

For a radar detector, I'm using a Uniden R7. It's great. Gives me a good range and hasn't let me down yet. Obviously, for laser, it's simply a "you're busted, may as well just pull the fuck over," tone. But, if you combine it with a jammer, you'll be good.

I'm mainly looking for this to save me for minor speeding tickets ~5-20 over. If I know I'm going to be doing more than that I'll just got to Mexico where the cops can't sit.

You can wire a radar detector to the back of your mirror, and mount it to the upper windshield or buy a mirror mount. Looks clean and out of the way. Takes 5 minutes.

Here's the thing, lasers are not treated differently than any other electromagnetic radiation. They are all under the jurisdiction of the FCC.

Radar jammers are explicitly called out federally, but it would be trivial for you to get in trouble for using a laser jammer. I know its easy to believe that the FCC is just some governing body only concerned with who from comcast is lining their pockets, but they do in fact track people down for these type of violations. Radio technicians are familiar with this already, pirate radio and unlicensed ham's are often found. Any device which "creates harmful interference" is illegal, this is how they would charge you for a laser jammer. The FCC is notorious for not f*cking around.

I run a Uniden R7, works nice but I haven't got it dialed in correctly yet, I get way too many false X-Band alerts, to the point where I'm considering disabling that band entirely. I've had it a month now and I haven't yet had the laser alert go off, tough to say if that is because it doesn't work well or if I just haven't been hit by laser yet. Cops target the plate with laser guns, and the R7 sensor is on top of the device, I think its just relying on dispersion from the beam. I'd like to see an external sensor which can be placed on or near the plate. However the Ka-Band performance is really good, if I get that alert its always accurate.

I disable the x band as soon as I installed it.

I've had no laser encounters in SC, but quite a few in GA. Savannah and some of the surrounding PD's run laser. Most is still Ka, though. I have K band on for some of the dinkier towns that are running older radar setups. Uniden did a good job with filtering K for BLISS, but Chrysler will still set it off every now and then. I have X band turned off completely. I haven't been anywhere that still uses it for anything other than the roadside speed limit signs that show how fast you are going.

I've seen about 1/2 to 1 mile range depending on terrain. I usually get about 1/2 mile or better range here in the Savannah, GA/Bluffton/Hilton Head, SC area.

I used Cobra way back in high school and college. Ran Uniden when I used to drive a bunch for work. Haven’t had one for about 5 years now. Uniden seems to be the go to these days, especially if you want a higher end detector. Cobra is a little more budget friendly from what I recall, although I do believe Uniden has a lower cost model out there.
