You therefore might want to experiment with the typical hard braking in a straight line, but keep on the brakes moderately through the first 1/3 of the corner (as you turn-in). Roll off the brakes slowly, so you initiate your turn while braking somewhat hard, and finish your turn-in under light braking. This keeps the front end loaded, increasing front tire grip and reducing rear tire grip. It also forces you to stay off the gas, keeping the differential open, which allows the car tomore easily rotate as well.

This may help you get on the gas even earlier, as you can get the car pointed more easily and unwind the wheel earlier while applying power.

After much thought on the weekend I realized that on the last HPDE in my GTI I did trail brake to get the car to rotate on Turn 16. Seems like I was doing this last weekend but I can't be sure. It's quite the dance on that turn while trying to brake, downshift, hit the corner just right, etc...


However, on the carousel it's another story. If you have any ideas besides drifting I'm open to them. More camber is going to help and tires I'm sure.

first track experience

The first track event I did was Laguna Seca in my brand new 89 Mustang GT, I did the class room school and listened to the instructors give their pre track talks and even went with an instructor in his car (66 GT350). Then it was my turn, after a couple of laps I was ready to light it up and set the track record, I was hoping some racing scouts would be there to get my racing career started, then at turn 2 of my first fast lap one of the instructors passed me in a Taurus wagon with 3 students along for the ride and then I couldn't keep up with that damn Taurus wagon.
That was quite a rude awakening, and it proves that there is no substitute for seat time. Now I am able to hang with most station wagons and SUV's on the track.

3 bottles will most likely suffice, but I think I'd get a 4th just to have some on hand for when you bleed the brakes before the track day after the upcoming one.

Anybody have to run numbers on the side for track days? If so what did you use thats not permenant and hurt the paint? Blue painters tape?

Lots of people do use painter's tape, though most folks who get at least semi-serious about tracking move up to something with a little nicer appearance.

Back when I was autocrossing, I cut some numbers out of the white magnetic sheets you can find in craft stores. That was good enough for 60 mph or so by itself.

Once I started tracking, I've added strips of that blue painter's tape along the leading edges of my magnetic numbers to keep 120 mph wind from getting underneath and lifting the number up and off the car completely. Gives the numbers a little 3-D look, which I wasn't expecting.

I do at least rinse off and wipe the area where the numbers go so that if the numbers do move at all I don't end up with scratches. Been working so far.

Yeah I need something for high speed. Road Atlanta should be pretty fast down to 10a. I have static cling ones but I know theres no chance of those hanging on.

One of the local guys has a vinyl printer and printed out numbers for $20.

I was thinking something a little less permenant than vinyl numbers. Dont want everyone to think I wanna race everytime I drive on the street. I'll look into the magnets.

Vinyl pulls right off after your event, you don't leave them on...

I use magnetic numbers. They work really well.

Magnetic numbers look great and are very easy to use. One word of caution is they sometimes have a way of blowing off on fast tracks. I've done something similar to what Norm did, and use some painters tape to ensure they don't go flying off. If nothing else normal blue painters tape works fine.

This thread is just what I was looking for.
I just ordered a 2016 Gt with the PP and Recaros.
Ive done quite a few DEs at Sebring in BMWs plus run Chumpcar races in an E30 for the last 5 years.
My plan is to:. Run my 1st track event with only a Brake pad upgrade. Then change tires / rims. 2nd
Then do Springs and struts or coil overs. 3rd
Add the Support crossmember. 4th
Each time out I will be running a Laptimer and video so that I can see how each Upgrade improves my Laptime.

BTW does any one have a suggestion for a Rear Spoiler.? I like the Roush one but it doesnt appear to be very functional. I wont do the huge wing.. Looking for something tasteful..
