I just ordered a set of magnetic numbers from trackdecals.com

I read across several forums that it is highly recommended to apply some tape on the edges of the magnetic numbers for extra reassurance.

What type of tape should I use to help reinforce the number without the risk of damaging the paint?

Thanks for helping a noobie out!

I've never needed to with 3M brand magnetic material. If your magnetic numbers are good quality magnetics, they'll stick just fine. That's kinda the whole point of magnetics.

If they feel... limp, like the magnetic isn't very strong, then yeah. tape the leading edge with something, usually we just use like painters tape because it comes off clean.

I have been ~150 mph and my magnetic untaped numbers stayed on fine.

OP, previously I had Track Decals magnetic numbers. As long as you store them flat, they will stick just fine, no need for tape.

The only issue becomes if you don't store them flat, the corners/edges may lift off. And even then, you can warm them up in the sun or your hands, and it should stick.

If you need to tape for some reason. Wax under the magnets first, and it makes the tape come off easier.

They worked great for me for an entire season but got all stiff over time so I’m not trusting them this year. I ordered vinyl numbers.

But I’ve never had an issue with them.

I have numbers from trackdecals.com as well. I always use black painters tape on the leading edge of the numbers just to ensure air doesn't get behind them.

I store them flat, stuck to my toolbox and wipe them off (front and back) when taking off and before putting back on the car.

I too have magnetic numbers from track decals and never used tape but I always make sure the car is clean before putting them on and when storing them. To store them, I roll them with the magnetic side on the inside and in a tube used to carry art work.3 years same numbers no problems

It’s no Fun being behind a car when magnetic numbers come off….
Having experienced this at CMP and a Lexus last year..
flying projectiles are never good on track.

Consider your fellow drivers.. saving a few bucks getting cheap magnets may be someone’s else’s problem. Painters tape on the leading edge adds extra security.

I prefer to store mine flat so I got a bunch of cheap steel cookie sheets from the dollar store and use one sheet per pair of digits. Nicely stackable and keeps them clean and flat.
I might just do this. Good looking out.

Bringing this back up; Track Decals seems to be having production problems for the past several months. Where can I find good quality magnetic number decals (that will stick!) besides at trackdecals.com?

I've never used them, but read that trackplacks is a good company with quick lead time.

I've had an order with track decals for 3 weeks now for some circuit outlines. I don't need them, so no huge rush, but yeah, definitely some long lead times.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I didn't notice magnetic numbers on their site.

I waited over four months for my last trackdecals order and didn't get it until I disputed my payment. I have another order now four months old that I have not received.
