I'd hate to think what a true piece like this would do in the sunlight. The appliqué is fine. It looks nice and no one can tell its a vinyl.

One user found his PP dash trim peeling at the corner. The assumption is that the PP's unique machine-turned finish is an overlay of sorts. So if you remove the overlay, there should be a generic piece of aluminum sitting underneath.
It was the 50th anniversary dash that was found to have the applique, not the engine-turned PP dash - which I can't imagine is just an applique. But have not seen that confirmed/denied.

Looking at a picture just now of a PP the way light reflects off the dash does not bode well to it actually being turned and not an applique.

How could this be a cheap vinyl wrap? It continues to be one of the more intriguing mysteries of the s550 !!! It would be a real shocker if this is actually a cheap vinyl wrap...wow !!

Who will discover the truth on here?? Maybe someone will have there original dash trim piece replaced and we can see if the old one does peel off.

I wonder if Ford would be hush hush about this if someone were to ask a member of the s550 interior design team about this rumor.

Hmmm can Ford Customer Care on here resolve this mystery?

If the entire piece is easily removed, I will be tempted to peel it and polish the aluminum under it. How cool would it be put a mirror finish on the aluminum? That would look great and unique!

....and would be blinding in the sun. I even used ArmorAll on my dash once and that became blinding in sunlight because it was so shiny and reflective.

I will do my best to put this mystery to rest, JoeySD. ;)

If you have the PP dash, is that actually just a applique over top the standard premium brushed dash? And if you peel it, will you just end up with the premium dash anyway?
One user found his PP dash trim peeling at the corner. The assumption is that the PP's unique machine-turned finish is an overlay of sorts. ...
The premium dash is brushed aluminum, and the one I felt was quite rough in texture.
If the PP is aluminum with some type of applique it has to be a smooth piece of aluminum, not brushed. ...
That makes sense. I'll be a bit pissed if it is just a covered piece. ...!
Ahh ok, so it's not the fact that the two panels are the same, but that there's a possibility of having a cleaner finish lurking underneath. ...
If it's not a sticker...I would agree. It probably is a sticker because that's what they wrap the v6 mustang dashes with.
Can't you just feel it and see if it's smooth (meaning appliqué) or whether you can feel the machine finished surface (which would be slightly rough?)...
It's definitely a wrap. ...
Why not just use hydrographics instead of a wrap at that point. ...
Could it be a "foil" appliqué? Very thin machined turned metal foil applied via adhesive to the aluminum substrate?
It's a wrap of some sort. I felt a little sliver of it kicking up along the edge ...
Definitely a wrap of some sort. ...

Hey everybody, the following is what I heard from my product specialist:

The Satin Brush, Engine Turn, and Axle Spin dash appliques are real aluminum over a plastic substrate. They consist of only one layer of aluminum, with nothing hiding underneath. The panels are embossed with the pattern and formed (pressed) into the final shape before they are formed and bonded to the substrate. The aluminum is 0.74 mm thick (that’s ¾ of a mm). This is same process we have been using since 2005. The base dash is grained plastic.

That knowledge makes me sick every time a member is posting again this question. Instead of machined aluminum we are getting a "china fake" dashboard. It's the same with people who ordered the "premium leather" and have to figure out now that it is "Vinyl leather".
...
From the same source, Papaya, I can confirm that the Premium leather is real leather, from real cows, and is used on the seating surfaces.

Why is in the FORD brochure written:

"REDLINE Vinyl with leather inserts"

"Raven Black Vinyl"

And: Why did a member report that his PP dashboard peeled of on the edges?
Is there a protection foil on the dashboards and it was not taken off before shipping/installing? If it would be aluminum there wouldn't be some foil peeling. Would it? :help:

I'm gonna go ahead and side with :ford: on this one till a picture surfaces, or many more claims.

Same. For all we know the peeling layer was a protective film over the finished panel.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

Emboss:

1: to raise the surface of into bosses; especially : to ornament with raised work

2: to raise in relief from a surface

3: adorn, embellish

I'm going to go with #2 here, and hope that the aluminum panel really has had a pattern embossed onto it, not adorned or embellished (#3) with an applique.

At .74mm that's 0.029 inches, less than 1/32 inch. Is it possible that what is shown peeling is the aluminum over the plastic. Guessing here as I haven't seen the pictures.

I am only saying:
Look at the brochure. People who have ordered Dark Saddle get leather/leather. People who ordered Premium Trim getting Vinyl/leather and paid $400 extra? I mean that makes no sense. I am happy with my Dark Saddle what I ordered.

If there isn't a foil on top of the dashboard on the PP, why did our member got it replaced if it was "only a protection"?
Makes no sense too. Anyway. We will see for ourselves what it is.

Ok, this covers everything except the Diamond Mesh "aluminum" dash insert on the GT base I have coming in a few weeks. Is it a metal surface covering a plastic substrate also or "Carbon Fiber look" like the V6 dash?
