Yet Ford has been doing that for at least since 2001. I'm pretty sure oil temp in non-GT350 Mustangs is only there for the "look, I have an oil temp gauge which tells me its a real performance car" factor. Since its derived, there is absolutely no hardware costs involved for the digital display and for the real gauge in the GT350s, that uses a real oil temp sensor. Thought it was nice of Ford to send the derived temp down the bus in the same format as the real GT350 sensor did so they could sell the GT350 gauges to regular Mustang owners.
I'd bet Ford verified through testing that the 'derived oil temperature' gave a pretty accurate indication of what the real oil temperature was. Even though it's derived, it's useful information ... better than no oil temperature gauge.

It would be interesting if someone did install a real oil temperature gauge, then compare it's output to the derived indication on the dash.

Wow you sure know alot about Ford oil temps sensors! Even what they did with the bus!

Wouldn't the gt350 also be derived since it is plug and play with the standard mustangs? Camaros also use a derived value. This isn't terribly uncommon in this industry.

I would think that oil temperature is 1 of the parameters used for the calculation of the oil change feature.
Therefore even if derived I'm pretty sure that Ford engineers know what they are doing and that it is pretty accurate

Or more likely: conservative

Yes, derived in the GT350 too.
Are you sure? In the cluster of the GT350 you can bring up an actual temperature reading in degrees, instead of the low/normal/hot scale we get. I know the temperature comes across on the canbus the same way, which is why the GT350 gauge works in the base Mustang, but always figured they got a real sensor.

Is the oil pressure measured? Because export cars (18s) don't show that either.
Yes, the performance package comes with an oil pressure gauge on the dash. I like having it there where I can see it at a glance. It's a pretty good way to estimate oil temperature; as the engine warms up, the oil pressure goes down and oil temperature comes up. I know that the oil is still cold as long as the pressure is still high.

I have a real oil temp gauge (and also an aftermarket oil cooler) and on track at a very hot 90+ degree day, my 5W30 oil did not exceed 260* at worst, more around 220-240*.

The GT350 oil temp gauge is a calculated value; as is the virtual gauge on the dash. I had it and the calculated value is relatively accurate so long as you have not changed any element of your cooling system.

Run Liqui Moly 5W40 if you are tracking your car. That is what I did when I did not have an oil cooler (and got fast enough to worry about heat). Two oil tests with Blackstone Labs indicated it sheared VERY SLIGHTLY after 2-3 track days and 5K miles, but was otherwise still good to go. Car did not have an oil temp warning ever with that oil. I did get the warning with 5W20 in cooler ambient temps.
@wildcatgoal
thanks.
what car you have? what year?

ONE of the biggest problem I have is over cooling. I have installed a mishimoto for my 2018 mustang pp1. rst run around i still see this high temp problem. and the reason is because ( i think ) the OIL TEMP IS NOT A DIRECCT MESURMENT>
SO
NO MATTER WHAT I DO COOLING THE SYSTEM IT WILL SHOW indicator on yellow or red during track day. and this bring into LIMBO MODE.

please let me know even in PM

thank you

Alex

Can you purchase the oil temp guage by itself?

Thanks

I would like to install a real oil temp gauge in my 2018 EB PP car. I have the Mishimoto oil cooler installed, and like others noted on this thread, it appears to have little to no effect on the inferred oil temp shown in the gauge cluster. A couple questions for those who have installed a real gauge with oil temp sensor;

1. What gauge did you go with?
2. Where and how did you mount it?
3. How do the actual oil temps compare with the inferred oil temps?

Thanks.

1. I have an AutoMeter Colbalt oil temperature gauge.
2. No problem for me where I mounted it because I use it to confirm oil is hot enough to run hard.
3. My EB does not show inferred oil temps

Interesting, so for the 2020 EB HPP they installed a oil temp sensor and converted it to a real gauge? You are lucky, all of us regular EB and V8 owners get stuck with the stinkin' inferred oil temp gauge.

Thanks.

No it does not come with the sensor. The AutoMeter gauge comes with a sensor. I installed a Mishimoto filter adapter plate that has a port for the sensor.
