Oil Consumption Concern

2.5 quarts in 400 miles is way too much. Get it checked out ASAP.

Mine does 1 quart per 1500 miles, which I think is fine. I get soot on the exhaust pipes, but nothing shooting out the tailpipe. That ain’t right.

Fingers crossed it doesn't require replacement. If it does, I'll start looking into lemon law stuff. Luckily I sleep next to my lawyer...

I think you can only invoke lemon law if they are not able to fix it in X amount of days and it’s in their possession. Just get a new motor like some of us did. My new motor has 6 k miles and uses no oil. Plus I got a R motor.

Absolutely! It got significantly worse in tandem with the loss of oil.

Thanks DC. We'll look into all the nuances when/if the time comes but I greatly appreciate the heads up. Of course I'm mainly concerned about loss of resale value due to the replacement as others have mentioned (particularly since I bought it from a CPO Ford dealer). I wouldn't mind a newer R motor though!

At the 19 minute point, Carl talks about the oil consumption such as the Car and Driver long term test GT350 fiasco. C&D added 21.5 quarts of oil on top of the 5, 10 quart dealer oil changes in 40K miles.....a new record at the magazine! All that oil right through the CATS!

And take it easy too. If you still have cats on I'd say you're at risk of clogging one if your engine is pissing oil into the combustion chambers. Also bringing the octane level of the fuel mixture down. Don't wait on this one.

They inspected and performed their initial test. I was given the 'it's normal' response (printed out on the reciept and everything...).

Will continue driving it hard and monitoring over the next few weeks. Then take it to another dealer. Travel has me behind on everything.

Sorry to jump in but, as someone in the market for a slightly used GT350, is there a way to check for this issue before purchasing the car? I know if it were me, I'd probably look to trade mine in as soon as it showed symptoms and there seem to be ALOT of slightly used GT350s on the market. Also, has anyone had any issues getting this covered with the 5 year powertrain warranty?

Been on these forums since the beginning of the GT350 and although this info may be anecdotal I believe the 2016’s exhibit less engine issues.

Getting an Oasis report will show each time the car was brought in to the dealer which many with consumption issue owners would do. I’d find a one owner car and possibly a private sale along with if you find a forum member who is selling you could use their posting history on the site to understand the car’s history and how it was used.

As someone who has gone through the oil burning scenario I can say that your engine's oil consumption is definitely not normal. In my case it was bad intake valve seals on cylinders 1 and 2 that were the problem. Dealer scoped the engine while turning the crank and could see oil leaking past the seals and pooling on the pistons. Did the engine swap. New engine seemed much stronger than the original engine ever did, making me think that the original was a dud right from the get go. New engine didn't burn any oil while I had the car but I have since sold it and am waiting on my 2019.

I brought mine in for a coolant leak and at the same time I inquired about getting started on oil consumption test and I was told the process is as follows: need to start with clean oil then car needs to be brought in every 320km (200miles) or once a week whichever comes first for a span of 4800km (3000miles). Which for me would work out to about 5 months to drive this distance. Mine is right on Fords limit of 1 quart every 800km (500miles). Are others being told the same? The service advisor was reading the protocol from a manual. I thought the process was extreme.
