I‘m still in the process of trying to locate an experienced Tig aluminum welder to weld the two fittings for the external transmission fluid pump, to the tranny housing and a L-brace to the mounting plate for the pump.

Even though these parts won’t be seen, I still want nice looking and functional welds. My OCD would eat me alive if I settled for anything less than that.

Here are a few pics of the pump, mounting plate mock up and the transmission supply lines with fittings that I made up.

Overall, I would rate the quality of the work and customer service about a 7.75 out of 10 based on the entire experience.
You are very generous to give them 7.75. The confusion of not getting what you paid for and the poor service is bad enough. They owe you some new gears, the damage is unacceptable.

Personally I wouldn't run those damaged gears, you've put too much money and time my friend.

For cleaning up the gears: afaik a file won't (or shouldn't ) do anything. A diamond file may work but grinding may be the only option.
But by the time you are done this MT-82 holy quest is going to result in the finest Getrag/Magna transmission EVER!

Thanks! I ended up using my Dremel to very carefully grind down the nicks and debur the affected teeth. I feel comfortable with the work, as I can no longer feel any sharp edges that could potentially cause trouble.

You do nice work. :)
I remember going to a Caterpillar engine facility where the floor was all wood blocks (6x6 laid on end) so if any parts were dropped they would not be damaged. The cryo place should look into that.
I would do it in my garage except it would remind me of being at work. ;)

I was worried the whole time they had my parts, whether they would handle them with kid gloves. They could definitely stand to improve upon that area of the business. I feel like the mishaps occurred after the WPC process because the nicks were shiny or raw Looking steel.

I spotted your post where you first reported the damage, but didn’t really know what to say - I’m gutted for you and I would have been pissed … :frown:

I would agree that this is post treatment damage. I would hazard a guess that the WPC guy would be pissed if he knew what they looked like now. I guess he did a good job and then he hands them over and some other person caused this.

Have you reported it to them and had any feedback ?

Okay, my apologies for the delayed update. I spoke with the owner Ben at CTP about the damaged gears and he said to get him part numbers for the gears and he will order new ones, have them shipped directly to him, after which he will Cryo and WPC them and express ship them back to me. In addition, he sent me an express label and requested that I ship the 5 synchro rings back to him and he would WPC them.

While it’s another delay that I didn’t want, at least they’re making a bad situation right, so I’m good with that. As for how they got damaged, he said he doesn’t know and that they don’t have any video evidence of the parts having been mishandled while In their possession. He went on to say that he thinks the damage occurred during shipment while on the FedEx truck.

In the meantime, I have an appointment with aluminum Tig welder tomorrow to have the aluminum fittings welded to the tranny housing, as well as the external fluid pump mounting bracket. I’ll post pics of that when done.

trying to locate an experienced Tig aluminum welder to weld the two fittings for the external transmission fluid pump,
community collage welding class instructor. I don't know where you are in FL but check around St. Pete/Pinellas Park had quite a few machine shops and welders within a 3 block radius. Raytheon in Largo/Pinellas had a in-house machine shop that did custom fabrication.

Otherwise you should find exotic welders around NASA facilities and also around ship-building areas.

I *really* don't know about treating caged bearings. I would have definitely left them stock. While the races may be fine, the balls and the cage would be a serious source of concern for me.

Believe it or not, the welder that I will be using is in Pinellas.

I asked about the bearings before shipping them and Ben actually encouraged me to send them. He said it will strengthen the bearings tremendously and keep the races and balls round with all of the heat cycles, whereas without it, there could be a chance of it happening over time. When I saw the evidence of burn marks to the inner race on the original bearings, it made me think that he might be onto something, by suggesting I have them treated.

The welding work on the transmission and the pump mounting bracket turned out great! Shout out to LS1Coupe for putting me in touch with his buddy up in Clearwater to handle the work.

Input, output and countershaft bearings received Day Lube Nanoceramic Racing Grease. The syringe made this task super easy; just inject grease, wipe up the excess and reinstall the seals.

these aren't immersed or splashed bearings then? Open cage normally implies 'washing' or immersion. Otherwise the bearing itself would be sealed.
