MT-82 3rd Gear lock out.

Today I experienced the infamous 3rd gear lockout while doing a little spirited driving on my way home. I took second gear to just about 5500 RPM and went to put it in 3rd and no go. I let off the gas and pressed the clutch in and was able to get the trans into gear finally. All seems fine now. This is the first time I have experienced this. The car is a 2021 GT Premium with 9450 miles. Is this a clutch issue or transmission issue?

Gotta love the MT82! Could be a Synchro starting to go bad. Could also be slop in the OEM shifter linkage.

Gotta love the MT82! Could be a Synchro starting to go bad. Could also be slop in the OEM shifter linkage.
How do you like the MGW x- spec shifter? What would be a reason to choose that over the standard MGW shifter?

The MGW is stiffer than stock and is 100% mounted to the transmission. I've never experienced a lock-out with it and I push the car pretty hard at times. I've never driven an S550 other than mine so I can't comment on the difference in standard vs x-spec vs race.

Do you plan to drive and shift the car aggressively often? If so, I se I d that clutch upgrade. From there, you can really go deep inside to make more even more improvements, but it won’t be cheap.

MGW, Exedy Hyper Single, and BG Fluid seems to be the magic. Some people get their complaints solved by one, others need to do them all.

I've wondered if some cars have misaligned or poorly installed clutches from the factory.

Just swapping my fluid and using a heavier shift knob made a substantial difference for me. I have not experienced lockout even at 7500, but I normally shift at 7000 on the track. I've never had a 2nd gear lockout, only the infamous 3rd at high rpm.

I have the MGW and have gotten locked out once or twice with it. Unfortunately still a thing even after the shifter upgrade. Haven't tried the fluid swap yet. If it's the clutch like so many people say, i'm confused as to why it would only happen on the 2nd-3rd gear switch. Strange.

I wouldn't say all the time. Hopefully a new clutch will fix it.

Try a stainless clutch line first.
Then upgrade the clutch and shifter

I wouldn't say all the time. Hopefully a new clutch will fix it.
I used to get 3rd gear lock out semi often unless I used a slow and smooth motion. No banging gears. Had an lpxhd for almost 60k miles now and hasn't happened once. 8k rpm shifts all the time.

I did the steeda shifter bracket, bg fluid and steel braided line first but still had lock out. Did the clutch for unrelated issues but after it was installed the lockout was gone.
