...What M1 do you use, the EP or standard? It seems like opinions vary greatly on it, but I'd like to see some information on the newer formulations. I guess I have some more research to keep me busy when I have some down time too.

Red Line is nearly impossible to find down here where I recently moved to. One place had it back home in Virginia, but they wanted $14 a quart for it and wouldn't budge on pricing (small town, I guess). If the pricing was anywhere close to the PU, I'd already have been running it. As mentioned above, I got some killer pricing on the old formulation of PU ($4/quart), so I bought a few hundred dollars worth. :clap2:
I'm running M1 5W-20 EP in two Focus (Foci?). I run the 10W-30 EP in my wife's Explorer Sport with EcoBoost 3.5L. Used to run Redline 5W-20 in the EcoBoost with excellent results from Blackstone, but it is quieter and smoother on the M1. Latest Redline UOA below. Note the somewhat high Calcium. Redline is available on Amazon or you can buy it online direct from Redline. But it's still around $10 a quart.

I think this is a good testament among many cars out there that the eco is tuff when tuned and maintained properly.
That's not a fair statement, and I see people make it often. I maintained mine properly and it still blew. At this point I think it is partially luck of the draw.

I see modified catch cans being mentioned as possible contributing factors to ecoboost engine failure. I am curious why a completely separate catch can/breather that eliminates all oil vapor from the intake is not used more. Or is it simply the guys don't take that step until they are more heavily modified?
I have a modified catch can with no issues. I strongly believe the main issue here was 30 degree weather. Stock turbo. The car shifted into 2nd and op punched it and low rpm torque spiked. Low rpm torque has been know to bend and break rods. This is why I believe and why I went big turbo. Less low rpm tq means less stress on the motor. Like Adam said 0 big turbo pump gas cars have failed.

I agree with you that it is luck of the draw. Mine was maintained extremely well and not pushed hard or tracked. It had a tune which was the only mod on the car other than the rocker stripes.

Now that the engine has been replaced, I'm not touching the car. It sucks because I know how awesome the car was with the tune, but I'm not going to push my luck and risk blowing another motor.

Which tune did you have? How did the motor let go? During a pull?

I know the vvt stage2 spools slightly slower than the stock turbo. I'm wondering if it's enough of an offset on the torque to alleviate some of that early stress.

Yours was an early Spain built motor?

Hey guys, I recently looked up my vin and my motor was one of the earliest at March 2014 and I'm rocking 30k miles so far with 22 of those tuned. I'm not sure it's related to being built in Spain but hell in definitely knocking on wood just in case.

I lived in Spain - Barcelona, to be exact. If your engine was built in Spain, don't drive it between 2-3PM. It will be taking a nap. Perhaps this is why Spain engines blow... you've awoken them from siesta!

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-ford-focus-rs-first-drive-review

Gotta ask, why not drop the Focus RS engine in the Ecoboost and call it a day? Why so many issues with the Ford Tune for the 2.3 Mustang but unable to resolve for Mustang? What is their goal?
Reading the deep dive link off that article it sounds like quite a few changes were made for the RS including beefed up internals, a new head and a new turbo. Maybe these changes will make their way to the 2018 ecoboost. That is what I am hoping.
