I hit a sharp metal object that pierced through my bumper into my oil cooler. Seems to be the transmission oil cooler. I made a claim and it’s at the shop. I have made it clear I want new OEM parts but these insurance companies always try to go for used / aftermarket based on my policy. Would this be something I should do at home? Just seems like it will cost me a good amount out of pocket might as well go with my deductible and pay the difference if they refuse new parts. Let me know your thoughts

Sorry to hear and see your pain . I think our cars are new enough the repair will be with new Ford parts . My wifes 23 Blazer had the windshield replaced and I requested OEM Glass and approved . My Agent (St Farm) encouraged me to claim the windshield, I wish he would of told me it's a ding on my Insurance for 3 years . When I got my Mach1 last year , I insured thru Hagerty and that windshield claim showed up when they checked me out.
Before reporting or filing a claim to your insurance, think about paying yourself , it maybe cheaper in a long run .

BTW, just because it shows up doesn t mean it s an increase (depending on what it is). I have glass coverage and it s never been a ding on my record. A better quality insurance policy will use only new OEM parts. Sometimes cheaper isn t better with insurance. Too bad to see that. One year my wife ran over a debris field of parts from an accident that happened in front of her. It was dark and who knows how long it was out there but it put a hole in the transmission and other minor stuff. Thousands to fix. No ding on insurance at all.

Yes, passenger side is your trans cooler. It's not a horrible job to do yourself. You can get the shop manual on-line. If you have to invest in some tools, its still worth it.

I had to pay extra to get OEM glass put in on a vandalism claim (half car repaint, 3 new pieces of glass, and still have issues to fix) on a 2 year old car w/ only 5k miles.

Had a friend have a right front collision in his GT 350 and that cooler is indeed the trans cooler. He did a full on out of pocket repair on it, and did some upgrades at the same time though. All Ford parts.

True. I am not worried about this increasing my premium. I was not at fault as it shows on my claim. I guess I will decide once they pull it apart, to see what parts they are using. If anything I will have it towed home when apart and fix it myself depending on cost.

Also I am aware it will show up on carfax, that's ok with me. I am not planning to sell it.

Also I want to add, Tow truck service was terrible as they usually are. They brought the regular hook and chain one, I was like hell no. Send me a flat bed. Waited nearly 3ish hours side of road. I should have used my AAA instead of the one by insurance, that was my mistake.

Any claim on your insurance will raise the rate upon renewal.

I'd check with @LevittownFordParts on the cost of the cooler. Your deductible plus the increase on the policy over 3 years may not be worth it

Removing the front bumper is easy. re-attaching the fender extensions is kind of a PITA. You have to sand off all the glue/foam from the double sided tape to then reapply it.

Thanks for suggestions. I will keep these in mind, they are pulling it apart already. So once I get the new estimate I will either tow it home fix it or pay the difference if I have to.

I've always been successful using the phrase "pre accident condition" in any conversations with adjusters and shops about how my vehicle will be repaired.

maybe it depends on the state and the insurer. Talk to the shop about parts and let them know what you want. It s not a given that the rates will go up (because of accident/ no fault accident). also I had a $10K claim on my Ram truck, then I hit my own insurance under "uninsured driver and diminished value", got a check for $5K. Sold truck a few months later to carmax. It was never listed on carfax. ???? No rate increases. Results will vary.

Agreed! It has gotten so crazy that personally if the car isn't completely totaled, I think I would rather just pay out of pocket for repairs at a shop of my choice than deal with years of additional rate increases due to one claim. It defeats the purpose of insurance, but either way we all will pay for it one way or another... the insurance companies will always come out ahead.

Don’t assume you’re going to get OEM automatically just because your car is newer. My car is a 2022 and I got hit this summer. Insurance (not mine, the one who hit me) tried to go aftermarket on headlight, fender and mirror. Had to go back and forth a bit but finally got them to agree to OEM (and new OEM, not used). Basically told them (and showed them through pictures) that my car was more or less still like new and that I expect it to be repaired as such with OEM parts. And even after that it required some additional back and forth from the body shop.

Good luck but expect a tussle with insurance on OEM parts if aftermarket or reconditioned OEM is significantly cheaper for them
