I understand. I am not worried about the difficulty, i worked as a mechanic helper for Ford in heavy line department in my early 20s and I always do my own repairs. I had mistakenly thought this would cost me good amount out of pocket and I just didn’t want to deal with it right now so i decided to go with insurance. If this happens next time i will tow it home, I think at this point claim is made and it’s too late. Now I just got to be on top of them to make sure they don’t put trash parts on car.
Understood. You should be able to peer thru the front grill at the oil cooler and see if they added used parts. If they end up using after-market parts, I don't think it's any big deal as long as all the cooler fins aren't dented and looking all kinds of horrible.

Just got off the phone. Looks like the upper splitter, lower splitter and the transmission cooler were the only damage as expected. All parts are new OEM since they can't be found used or aftermarket :like: The invoice now is at around $3,700 and pending approval. I let them know I want to inspect the new parts in person before the car is put back together and of course don't wash it.

I got to find a good picture of the stock oil cooler to see where the part number is stamped to make sure its the OEM one.

Can’t you go to the Township, County or State and ask for reimbursement of damages since the debris was on THEIR road? They (Public Works, Dept. of Highways, etc) are supposed to be responsible for ensuring the roadways are free and clear of hazardous debris…

Had that bounced or was kicked up from another vehicle and hit your windshield, it could have come through at speed…

After you get it repaired I would definitley check to see if you can file a claim…

It’s a shame something like that will ding your VIN for any future VIN reporting.

Would have to file through Caltrans since it was on the highway. And based on some limited research I have done, they would only be responsible if there was construction in the zone and that debris struck my car. In this case it was a piece of metal that probably fell off a truck and was being thrown around in the freeway. I am not against trying that though, it doesn't hurt to try. Anyone have experience in something similar?

Friend of mine had his windshield cracked and dents in his hood from a city salt truck a couple of winters ago. They told him to get estimates and they would pay for the damages. They ended up playing a bunch of games when he submitted the estimates and ultimately never paid. So good luck 👍

Holy cr@p, but I forgot how expensive labor is… I can say removing my upper splitter with the bumper still on the car was a pain. I will say if the upper splitter is damaged on these cars there is a good chance the bumper itself is as well as the lower grille, but you won’t know until you get it off. I got lucky.

Are they sure the belly pan isn’t also damaged? I’d be surprised if it isn’t.

It was over the phone he only had the unapproved estimate, I am pretty sure the belly pan is included looks like its damaged. I told him I want to see the approved estimate with the detailed part numbers sent to me before they start repairs.

I hit a sharp metal object that pierced through my bumper into my oil cooler. Seems to be the transmission oil cooler. I made a claim and it’s at the shop. I have made it clear I want new OEM parts but these insurance companies always try to go for used / aftermarket based on my policy. Would this be something I should do at home? Just seems like it will cost me a good amount out of pocket might as well go with my deductible and pay the difference if they refuse new parts. Let me know your thoughts

Looks kinda cool with no bumper. Those wide front tires look nice.

It's pretty cool seeing them with the bumper and belly pan off, you can see all the coolers and work they did to plumb coolers, package components and direct grill, cooler, and underbody airflow. I do think the engine oil cooler needs to be larger though.

Hello; Two things come to mind. One is why a fender bender can be so expensive because of all the stuff under the front covers.

The other is I get the idea of a larger oil cooler but as most vehicles do not even have one at all, the one in place is a good add on. I guess they put in what would fit. But yes, bigger would not hurt.

Check out the 7th Gen cars. They have coolers in the same places as the 6G, AND moved the PCM to right in front of the right front tire. Where something as minor as knocking down a mailbox can leave you stranded. Pretty much just above and behind the trans cooler in the above picture.
