Love/Hate and the S550 Mustang

Why is it that everyone who speaks or comments about Mustangs either LOVES or HATES them? Never seen a 50/50 split of haters before on anything I've driven. I posted in an Olds Group that I was going to sell my 73 Cutlass 455/4 Speed because I bought A mustang and over 60% of the guys were just d!@#heads about it. Saying "Nice Camry", "See you on the sidewalk", "Junk", Won't last 5 years" and on and on. I took an ex employee for a ride who is 24 and I've known for many years. He says this looks nice, and I don't even like Mustangs! I drove around for a few minutes, and hit 3 gears in drag mode. He was blown away and in love with the car. I asked him if he got the bad opinion of Mustangs from his 4 cylinder driving friends, and he said yes. LOL Where did all that hate come from?

Here is what I know: I love my mustang and I am glad I bought it. It is fun to drive and I think it looks fantastic.

Everyone else can go phuck themselves.

It's not really that I worry what they think, I just wonder where it comes from. I like cars from all brands (At least American brands, past & present). I've never experienced this level of hate for a vehicle before. I just think it's a rather odd phenomenon.

You know, OP, that way back in the 60s Ford would take their muscle cars to different cities and dealerships on trailers so people could see what was being raced on the dragstrip and NASCAR. What you did likely converted that guy. That's all it takes. My brother doesn't really like muscle cars anymore, but when he drove my '15 he said "this is the nicest car you've ever owned". You did good!

In the social media age. Evertthing is love or hate. Team Trump or Team Hillary. Clash of clans bullshit. Its a car. Whats to hate? You dont like it. Dont buy it. But on twitter or facebook. You cant just have a nutural opinion. Because those dont get likes.

I have had more compliments on my Mustang than any car I have ever owned. The young kids want me to do a burn out. The older folks are surprised at the level of equipment once considered luxury.

At the dragstrip, I have even had Camaro owners compliment it....although they may be just being polite. One even asked if he could sit in it. He was impressed with the visibility and seat comfort. I don't hang around the Civic, Mitsubishi, Subaru crowd much but I haven't really gotten any negatives from them either.

The Mustang has about 25 years of history of crap cars, if they grew up during that time (like many did) it can take some work to overcome that initial impression.

I thought mustangs after the early 70's were trash until the 2005 reboot happened.

Let me edit-in: I'm pretty fickle with regard to car brands, myself. I owned MGs for a number of years, but it seems the Mustang has kept me interested for record time (new one is my sixth since 2006).

Well it’s a heavy pig (bad), with a great V8 (good), but its predecessors left a bit to be desired (bad) but this model is quite good.

Plus anyone who has already bought a different sports car probably thinks their underpowered and expensive car handles better, or is somehow more pure. Confirmation bias means they need to save ego and justify the expensive decision they made, which means putting down nearly all other options.

The only people you can trust are the ones who don’t have an opinion and see things as they are, without bias. Respect is good. Opinions are usually bad.

I hear you OP. I just went to Coffee&Cars and it was funny to watch all the brand clicks. The human dis-function to want to have opposition and enemies is more apparent in some people.

This x1000......and the GM guys have hated it since 1965 because:

A: If it weren't for the Mustang to copy, there would be no Camaro.

B: The Mustang is an American Icon. They can like it, lump it, or take it down the street and dump it. That's a fact.
