Lets Talk Diff Coolers....

BLUF: You should be able to mitigate most of the risk with changing to a thicker fluid.

We(GT PP owners) think the overheating of the diff is isolated to the 3.73 diff's(torsen) only. The other interesting thing is no one with a 15 GT performance package(temp sensor not present until 16 pp) seems to have reported a diff failure. However, 16+ performance package cars are able to monitor diff temp through the ngauge or forscan lite and, on track, temps are getting close to 300F in some situations. We have seen a drop in temp rise with the 75w110 and 75w140 fluid. I'd type more, but i have a broken wrist and am a 1 finger bandit right now.

How big a temp drop w the thicker diff fluid?
What brand have you guys used?
Is it compliant w Ford specs?

It's not that it necessarily dropped the temp as much as it slows the temp climb down. So many variables play into it, it's hard to compare. For me, I'm a advanced group/instructor, I run hoosier R7 295/40/18, and changed to Amsoil 75w110. Before the change, I got the warning at COTA in Feb(mid 80's) after running a couple of sessions almost back to back. Since switching fluid, I have not got the warning anymore (to include a 3 day event at Road Atlanta in June in the high 90's). That was with stock hp. I now have probably 50 more hp and up'd my redline to 7500 rpm's so I'm curious to see how much hotter it gets. I bought the track package GT350 diff cover(around $60 I believe) to make my own cooler, but I'm not in any hurry.

As far as fluid, @Optimum Performance sells the BG 75w140 kits that work well. I'm sure Tim will chime in shortly. He is also working on a diff cooler kit.

@Plimmer built a diff cooler on a non pp car and has ran it through it's paces at COTA(might be a good solution for you tech guys without the sensor or harness):

Not sure where the question went, but someone asked the PN for the track package diff cover. It is FR3Z-4033-B, but I think the part counter guy has to put in a track pack VIN. Benny at Levitown can square you away. I just checked my receipt, it was $76. I love Ford parts.

Ordered my differential cooler from Fluidyne, very helpful people. It will be a custom piece with better capacity than the factory cooler. I'll post pictures when I get it to install and get the mounting bracket made.

Good for you bro, would you mind sharing a link to whatever it is you ordered, or is it not online since it is custom made.

How much if you don't mind me asking are you paying for the kit and what is included ?

Have you asked those sam people about a trans cooler ?

Is the track pack diff cover different than the tech pack? They are listed as the same part #FR3Z-4033-B

The trouble is connecting it. Has anyone figured this out? @GT_Dave looked for a connector but did not see one.

Seems like @Optimum Performance was all over that discussion... Maybe they could weigh in here to provide a summary?

I'm really hoping that is the next thing Ford Performance will work on. It's not a huge issue to add wiring and a switch and a relay to the car to get a pump working, but we need to know where to connect the rear differential temperature sensor so that the diff temperature will be shown on the dash. Most of us here already know how to modify the CAN modules to get the temperature readings to display, so that's not a big deal either. It possibly might just require some instructions and an electrical connector, along with the PN of the appropriate crimping tool.

I am still working out the details, I will post the information when I confirm the parts.
For the sensor I am using a Glowshift gauge and sensor. The sensor is mounted in the factory pocket.


The gauge is in the cockpit, I am keeping the differential setup like this until something better comes along.

FR3Z4033B is the correct part number. All my parts were ordered from an R model Vin. The cover is different, it comes with the fittings for the cooler (OEM quick disconnects) so it has three 1/2"NPT holes instead of two. The cover lists for $110.82. Benny has good pricing but he is too far away from us for the volume so I source everything from a local dealer so we can touch and feel parts and compare stuff from other models.
