My Shelby may have hit 166 mph at 7,800 RPM in 5th. Not sure how much it had left.

I think it had a few MPH more left in her.

I thought that the maximum speed of the GT350 was at max RPM in 5th gear. So the problem isn't power, it's gearing.

Am I remembering this wrong?
My statement is still accurate. 6th is tall but there's enough power to pull it if the car had a lower CD.

That is exactly correct. 5th gear at 8250 is all she has. I was very close to 8250 if not there. Going that fast, I have my display set to TPMS sensors not MPH. There was a BMW that blew a tire on the front stretch doing 140ish and I have no idea how he kept control of the car. Anyway, by the time you get near those speeds at Daytona (170ish), its time to get on the brakes in preparation for turn 1 of the Rolex course.

Now, about that ZL1/1LE killer that's coming. That is exactly what I am looking for.

I like to disassemble things.

That was Van Collier I believe. Great guy and a heck of a driver.

The fastest I saw was 175.5. Not much left. My guess the 350 max speed is 180
My 08 RS4 can hit @169mph, limited. Some of the guys have removed their limiters an @192 is reported. That's 420hp. The R is probably a little slower than the non-r due to aero but I really wonder what the top speed is... soon. ;) gearing limited, is the only thing.

Exactly. Gear and distance limited. Switch up the gearing, get a longer stretch, and the horsepower vs drag is the limitating factor.

Honestly, the GT350 wad not designed to be a rolex car or a NASCAR. It's a damn good track car and HR871 will always be in my garage.

Again, back to the GT500.....

My EB hits 282 kph fairly easily.

That was just an inter cooler and tune. 3.31 gears
I honestly expected 350s to have significantly more top end. The extra torque from FI should help the 500 push that 6th gear while tiil deep in the power band.

So are you saying that the CD of the GT350 is poor? Do you expect the GT500 will have a better CD than the GT350?

I think if the GT350 had another gear between 5th and 6th spaced appropriately to put the engine in its power band it would have a faster top speed.

I'm sure the GT500 will make more power than the GT350 and if it has a 7 speed DCT it will definitely exceed the GT350's top speed. I would expect the car to have more downforce than the GT350 and I would be surprised if the GT500 can hit 200 mph unless some of the aero bits are removed.

According to my analysis, 5th at redline is 175mph, which is top speed. Shifting to 6th @ 175 drops RPMs to 5200, which drops power from ~460 to 370, which cannot overcome the drag.

I agree with your point, however, that if the Cd was sufficiently reduced, top speed could be achieved in 6th. Shortening the final drive sufficiently might allow the same, or, perhaps a combination of both Cd and final drive.

According to C&D, the ZL1 with the A10 hits 195 MPH in 8th. I would think a GT500 with the predicted power discussed here would be able to top that as is?

I agree, the GT350 with a different 6th, or an extra gear added in between could have a higher top speed.

You don't want your top speed to come from an overdrive gear due to the extra friction within the transmission. Much better to keep it in 5th(direct drive ratio) and install a taller final drive such as a 3.55 or 3.31 in place of the factory 3.73. Not only do you benefit from the higher top speed but you also reduce driveshaft RPM's which will increase the safety factor of top speed driving.

If you have a low enough CD and frontal area, the GT350 can hit 220mph! If you have a lot more power it would too. -or change the final drive ratio to make the top speed in 5th higher or swap out 6th gear for a much more performance oriented 0.85 to 0.9

...or, you and drive it in a vacuum using bottled air...it may get up to 278 MPH in 6th at redline...

The S550 as a whole isn't that great for CD, and the GT350 is worse. It's done for good reasons: aero performance, cooling, etc, but it's not a slippery car. A 911 is much more so, for instance.

The 500 will have enough power to overcome the drag from the aero.
