You guys are lucky that you aren't in Europe where we pay crazy taxes! In the UK (which isn't the worst) we pay 20% sales tax, plus an initial registration fee which for the EB is $1,000 and the GT is $1,600, plus an annual fee of $500 for the EB and $800 for the GT. And our gas is still over $6 / us gallon (£1,08 per litre...)

So for a £35K (or $56K...!) GT, we pay the government over £8K ( =$14K) in tax and Ford only get £27K of that.

Okay, paying such high taxes like that, how the hell do you guys live? Citizens there must get paid VERY WELL to afford all those taxes.

In SC, sales tax at the time of the sale. Thankfully, capped at $300.
Property tax every year. And it is dependent on the county/location you live in. I could move 8 miles up the road to the. Next county and cut my tax bills in half or more. Hell, for a time there I was paying $25 per registration per car for a bus service I've never used.
We bought my wife a 2013 Honda Pilot in Nov of '12. Her first year tax was $1300. Dropped to under $1000 this year. Probably about $700-$800 next year. My '66 Mustang is something like $20 but is worth as much as my new cars.

For Phoenix, AZ the sales tax is 8.3%. Then the way to calculate the registration is cooky. Here's the formula for a $30,000 car:

tax: $2,490

registration: 60% of car value, then it's $2.80 for every $100, so....
(($30,000*0.6) / 100) * 2.8 == $504

NH $900+. EVERY year. Based on your cars age, original msrp and weight. It doesn't get cheap unti your car is about 8 years old.
BUT WE HAVE NO SALEs TAX! Don't have to wear seat belts, and can marry anything we want.
I would rather have a hefty sales tax and have cheaper car registration and cheaper property taxes. Holy hell, mine are almost $5k a year! Payoff your mortgage and STILL have a huge monthly bill for tax or lose your home.

I think some of you are confusing Tax, Title, License, first time registration, etc fees for renewal fees. With several exceptions the registration fees in most states don't exceed 90.00 or so. Here is a list of each states renewal fees:
