Do you wait until the engine is completely cool or do you just do it after driving a bit?

I like to wait till it's completely cool so that most
of the dirty oil returns back to the pan. I don't really like to mix clean oil with dirty oil.

When completely cool, any sediment could stay in the bottom of the pan. At least that's what I was raised to think lol.

I do it cool but I start it up for a minute or two to stir everything up and get anything in suspension so it all drains out.

COLD - so I don't get burned by the oil. Just changed the oil for the 1st time on Ghost Rider #381 LE WW @ 3,500 miles. Really nice "door flap" that opens up for easy access to the filter.

Cool. If I use flush, I run to flush, then let it cool again before draining.

Changing the oil when warm works the best -- the oil flows out faster, and less of it sticks to the engine when draining due to it being less viscous in it's warm state vs. cold. Changing when hot sucks -- don't like getting burned!

Granted...... the difference is small, but I've been changing my oil warm for 30 years, and it's worked well for me.

I change it when the mood strikes me regardless of whether the oil is hot or cold.

I have an advantage over most of you in that I have a lift in my garage and spend some quality time checking out the bottom of the car while the oil drains.

Warm. I'll drive it around the block then it takes a few minutes to put it up on ramps. By that time it has warmed up and will flow better but isn't burning hot. You'll never get all the old oil out of course but you can get more to flow out when warm than with cold oil, especially this time of year.

I drain oil when engine is anywhere from hot to warm. You can get teh best of both ways by letting it sit draining, whil eyou do something else for an hour (or more). When I have the time, I do this and figure if I have not seen a drop come out in a minute or so (warm or hot engine). that's gotta be as much as I will ever get out.

I get the oil hot then let it cool down to warm. That's what my Dad taught me 40 years ago & have been doing it that way ever since.

I've been using the same oil drain pan for the last 35 years. It's has a built in drain spout makes it easy to empty.

Here's a stupid question; I always hand tighten my filters, but I never know how much... Hand tight as in as tight as I can get it by hand? Or hand tight as in just until it gets tight?

As tight as you can with your hand without going all beast mode on it lol. I had a dealer tech must have done the just until it gets tight and by the next oil change the filter was falling off the car this was on my old 2010 challenger.

Warm - not hot. I have no desire to get burned. Hand tighten as far as it will go with your hand only without hulking out on it - after ensuring the previous gasket came off with the old filter and rubbing a little oil on the new filter's gasket.

Warm for my personal cars. Been a tech for 11 years and have had to change oil at all temperatures, even fresh off the highway at a billion degrees. I try to let it sit for a few minutes to drain as much as possible.
