drop 15 seconds? Not a chance, that’s a huge ask.

the Merc One went from 6:35 to 6:29 with a whole lot more everything…I doubt the GTD gets much under 6:50 even after the repaving that’s coming in the spring 🙈🙉🙊
This is what i was hoping to see. I was curious what the delta was for other cars that did additional runs to know what can be expected for the GTD. Seems like 5-6 sec is a decent place to start.

At the end of the day they have to base this around two large lumps of metal. The steel chassis and crash structure of the S650 including it's heavy doors and a variant of the Predator 5.2.

We have seen with the S550 Shelby cars that there are only a few pounds of savings in replacing the hood and fenders with carbon items and the plastic bumpers aren't going to shed any reasonable weight with a switch too.

On top of that you're looking at some savings from some aluminum suspension pieces and subframes, but we're not shaving hundreds here with those items and some of that is going to be offset by the even wider wheels and larger brakes and the hydraulic systems for the active aero and height adjustable suspension.

I'd wager that this car is coming it at around 3700lbs in the best case scenario and is likely heavier.

For comparison the AM GT Black Series front/mid-engined and rwd with big aero. It is 3,600lbs and makes 720hp. It lapped the ring in 6:43 on a set of Michelin Cup 2R tires. It's also right around $320,000

If the GTD has 100more hp, similar aero, and even wider Cup2 R tires and it is 14 seconds slower, that says to me that it's got a weight/calibration disadvantage compared to the AMG and probably more than just 100lbs. Obviously they didn't have the best day, and on 6-7 minute course it would be easy to gain tenths all along the way and maybe cut that gap in half bringing them to a 6:50, but anything below that seems like it would take a massive change.
Larry Holt said they were expecting around CFTP weight (40xx lbs), maybe a hundred less, and this message is repeated on the GTD forums.

I have no reason to not believe him. And these lap times seem to support it. 3900-4100.

To be clear. a 4000 lb car doing a 6.57 is massively impressive. Just look at the weights of the cars that are faster than the GTD. BUT....after all the hype, the price, the requirement to sign NDA's and the requirement to audition to even be considered for a GTD, it should be a GT3RS killer on the ring with a well seasoned driver.

Fully agree. I think the GT black series is an all aluminum chassis and if anythign I was hoping that's what the S650 would have been given Ford's commitment to aluminum with the F150 line.

Shuffling a 4,000lb tank around that track in 6:anything is a massive accomplishment. The GT3RS is like 3,200lbs by comparison.

We also don't know any sort of downforce numbers for this car. The dual element wing suggests it's rather high but we don't know for sure. The 1,900 lbs at 170 mph that the GT3RS produces is going to be tough to beat.

Congrats to Ford but yes, they still have a long way to go to be in the same realm as Porsche.

I'm sure the Ford GT would do well here; not sure why they never took that car to the ring (as a production car).

The goal was was to take the race ready GT3 and make it a road car in the sub 7 minutes class at Nurburgring. And to be able show they can compete in that lofty realm with the 20 or so European cars. The only American car to date in the sub 7. Bravo.

The Mustang platform is hindering its performance. I love the GTD, it’s such a cool car, but you aren’t going to be top of the heap at the ring in a car based off of this platform, it’s just not possible without an already exorbitant cost. The 2025 ZR1 is going to smash the GTD at a reduced price to the tune of roughly $125K less.

The Mustang platform comment was spot on. Sub 7 with essentially a rental car base platform is impressive but certainly holding it back.

I laughed at your ZR1 comment. Hell of a car for the price but it won't beat the GTD. The ZR1 has laughable downforce. 1,200 lbs at 215 mph.... 🤦‍♂️
In a straight line, it'll be top dog but when it comes to the twisties, downforce is king and downforce is what the ZR1 lacks.

Maybe 15 seconds isn’t achievable, but I’d rather it be a stretch target like that than settling for something like 3-5 seconds. Stretch goals make you work to find better solutions than some easier target IMO. They don’t need to share with the world what their stretch target is (and they probably won’t), but if they shoot for 15 and only shave 8-10 off, that’s pretty darn good and would be a very respectable time (heck, 6.57 is very respectable, beats some cars that are priced two to three times as much).

I’ll be interested to see what the ZR1 does. The Multimatic team made sure to note that GTD started with the race car (GT3) and worked backwards as opposed to starting with a production car and building a race car. As far as we know, GM took the standard route of starting with a base C8 and building upwards towards a race car with the ZR1. That may put some limitations on the ZR1’s capabilities (it also might not, we just don’t know yet).

I am rooting for both the Vette and the GTD to do well, they’re the last American V8 sport/muscle cars standing. We need them both to succeed to keep the V8 platforms around. Ford has basically committed to it for now but I’m not so sure about GM given their electric push.

More Marketing hype on a car that's not available to the general public at any price. Ford contracts an outside company like Multimatic to make a limited production run of special Mustangs so Ford can milk the publicity in the media. At least GM offers their built in-house Z06 and ZR1's to the general public, at significantly less cost, if you're so inclined.

And that’s fine. I’ve never once heard the word Corvette come from anyone’s mouth at Ford or Multimatic when talking GTD, at least not publicly (I don’t know those guys personally so maybe they’re saying it privately). They’re benchmarking against Europe, and Porsche specifically.

The ZR1 and GTD will be compared by the general public and car mags no doubt. But it seems to me the only thing that Ford cares about with regards to the Vette is beating it to being first to go sub-7. Which they did.

And yes, the higher volume Chevy dealers will probably sell the ZR1’s at MSRP, but there will be plenty that don’t. Actual cost to buyers will be much closer to GTD pricing when factoring in ADM. I could care less about MSRP comparisons when the actual $$ amount coming out of someone’s wallet is very different. No ADM on the GTD as far as I know, the dealers that accommodate delivery get some kind of fee from Ford as I understand it from others here.

Oh yeah, call your local Chevy dealer and ask how long the wait is for a ZR1. It’s not like they’ll be flooding showrooms with them. I’ve heard upwards of 2-3 years waitlist from the couple Chevy dealers I know.

GTD has already broken a record and it can still do better. Also No one gives a f**k how the GTD compares to a ZR1. GTD is after the big boys so sit down.

Also its not just a mustang, it shares some parts but have you seen the suspension setup and rear transaxle? this is a serious contender and it was designed based on the GT3 race car. You just talking smack now.

Lets not forget the GT3 race car got a podium finish at the Lemans recently...
