This car is something else. It’s not the fastest car I have owned. Doesn’t have the most horsepower. Is not as modified as some of my other ones.
But it is special. I’m not sure if it’s the looks, the sound, the fact that it’s a “Shelby”, for whatever reason, it is an absolute magnet for attention. Car people know what it is, and usually want to hear it rev. I get that all the time. That is the most common experience. People on the sidewalk gesturing at me, at the stop light revving, or just plan yelling at me to rev that shit up.
Non car people just wave and point or say nice car. They ask if it’s real. I guess they mean is it actually a GT350. They ask how much it cost, what do I do for work. They assume the car cost a fortune, and that I’m rich. Nope! I got it used with 18k miles. Some other dude got blasted with the markups and depreciation.
I bring this all up because today was just one of those days the GT350 delivered a unique experience. It started with me getting pulled over by state trooper. Got me for the tint; which is absolutely illegal. 99.9% of the time in my area, the cops don’t care. All of their cruisers are illegal, it’s Florida so it’s hot, and illegal tint is on damn near every car on the road. Usually they just use tint as an excuse to dig deeper into you and the car looking for dope and stuff.
Turns out the cop was a Mustang guy, and he really just wanted to see the car close and talk about it. See if I liked it, he was considering getting one. I let him sit in it, he played with the shifter, popped the hood, looked under the car. I must have talked to the dude for half hour. Told him to start using this website if he was serious about getting one. Then we shook hands and he let me go within a warning. Said if it was his car he would have tinted as well.
Get back on the road and kept it moving. Ten minutes later I feel eyes on me. I’m in the right lane and there is a minivan next to me on the left matching my speed. Passenger window is down and they give me a thumbs up. They start to pass, and the guy leans halfway out the damn window, taking pictures or video.
He wasn’t fooling around. He was damn near falling out the window. What do you think happened next? We are going 70 mph. The wind grabbed his phone and yanked it right out of his hand. I had to swerve into shoulder to dodge the thing. Would have busted my windshield so easy.
Nothing I could do. Let them in front me so they could pull over and run back to get it. I waved and gave them a few revs.
It’s flattering I suppose. We are blessed to own these cars. I do my best to share the car with people, especially kids. I let them sit in it, take pictures, give them a short ride if I can. I remember being that age, and how positive an experience it is when you get to see and touch a dream car.
Does everyone else get the same attention in your GT350 or GT500? Like substantially more attention than average sports car? I can’t be the only one.
