Fuel recommendations / octane booster

Looking for advice...

The metro I live in stopped carrying 93 octane fuel many years ago. The closest station with 93 is an hour + drive. So, I’m left with using 91 as my only local choice.

What if any octane boosters do you recommend? How effective are they? Do they cause any problems down the road?

Boostane all the way. I run a splash of it every tank of 93 and a full bottle when I run my 100 octane tune. 13,600 trouble free miles and counting.

I also recommend Boostane. That reminds me, I have an unused case I need to list for sale. I used it with my Whippled car I no longer have.

While we are on the subject of octane, would one of you experienced with converting to E85, please explain what is involved. Are the negative aspects regarding ethanol and rubber/vinyl resolved with the new vehicles or will there still be degradation after the vehicle has been tuned for E85?

Just buy ms109 and mix it. Safer and better than any over the counter octane booster.

You could also look into water/methanol injection. It will cool everything as well as adding effective octane. Quality parts go a long way, and 2.5g tank should last a while, you can easily put distilled water, or straight windshield washer fluid in (70/30)

E85 requires 33% more fuel to produce the same power, but has a much higher octane rating, as well as cools inside the combustion chamber allowing for more boost/timing for greater gains.

Older cars suffer from fuel systems that will be eaten by the ethanol (lines/fittings), newer cars are compatible

Don't forget engine oil contamination, requiring more frequent oil changes.

V and Earl: Thanks for the insight but I'm curious about E85 requiring 33 percent more fuel. Is the trade off more horsepower?

V: Thanks for the great advice. What mix ratio do you recommend? (5 gallons and top off with 91?) Also, what’s the shelf life? Is it better to buy it in 5 gallon or 30 gallon quantities?

93 is still readily available in South Texas so I too am interested in your recommendation on ratios. In my case, simple, hard, street driving using 93.

For less than twenty bones per gallon, if the ratio is decent, that wouldn't be THAT much more in fuel costs. But, like Big John, I wonder about the life longevity when buying five gallons.

Ive been running E85 for about a year with no issues, I daily my car so no water intrusion problems and I change my oil every 4k.

You'll either have to wait to see whether the stock fuel system can support E85 as far as volume or be the guinea pig yourself. I'm betting nothing more than a BAP will be needed at most.

I'm running a 13/14 GT500 fuel hat in a return setup and it handling 750whp on E85 with no BAP, im betting the G6 GT500 will have an better fuel system than the G5

It requires more fuel because each molecule produces 30% less energy when burned. the trade off is that E85 is at least 105 octane but it t's detonation resistance seems much higher than 105 octane gasoline so it allows more timing advance for more power. I see 22deg advance on E85 vs 17deg on pump 93. It also provides a greater cooling effect when it vaporizes vs gasoline.

Bonus is E85 wont make you stink if you run no cats.
