I am replacing my fuel pump today and when I twisted the locking ring off the pumps housing floated up and fuel started coming up. A lot of fuel. Does tank need to be completely empty to change fuel pump? I only have about 5 gallons in the tank. Is this normal?

De-pressurize the system first?

That should not happen. I just pulled my factory pump out 2 weeks ago, didn’t depressurize anything. The only fuel that spilt was out of the factory bucket back into the tank.

Maybe your sending unit wasn't working properly, telling you that the tank was at 1/4, when really it was full? Take a photo of the opening where the pump was - Is the fuel up to the edge of the tank? Another possibility is that the purge valve/solenoid wasn't working properly, and so pressure was built up in the tank

Wait.....the car's lights are on in the picture. Any chance it was on but not running, with the system pressurized to start?

Where were the keys?

Same here. No issues like that when I did mine with about 1/4 tank of gas...

You need to be under 1/4 tank. I just did mine and ran it to under 1/4 and all I got that came out was a small enough amount of fuel to fit in a shot glass.

I wonder if there's a blockage in the transfer tube keeping all the fuel trapped in one side

Thanks for the help. Something is definitely weird about it. But I am positive I only have 5 gallons. So I guess that is over 1/4 tank. It really doesn't seem like a pressurized issue the fuel just seems like it's over flowing. But I will update when I work on it again.

For anyone who may be about to tackle this project, that first photo is a good reason to make sure you disconnect the battery and try to make sure you discharge any static electricity.

Tank is 16 gal and it sure looks like that could be about a gallon of gas there that spilled. Other posters might be right about being under 1/4.

Before Mustangs ever had a rear seat access sump, I've changed similar fuel pump setups on BMW's and never had fuel blowout like that, ever. I always made sure to disconnect fuel pump harness connector at fuel pump, start car and let it run until it dies, then pulled old pump to replace with new. After new pump is securely in place, reconnected fuel pump harness to new pump, start car and all was good. This S550 system isn't any different than the system used by BMW over the last 30+ years.

Wow... in that image, did fuel shoot up into the cabin of the vehicle too, like onto rear carpet?
