Thanks to all who have posted information doing oils changes. This is really basic stuff but with a brand new car and all the oil system related concerns that have popped up with these engines its nice to hear other peoples experiences. In this case knowing the torque spec of the canister was very helpful.
After all that has been theorized about potential causes of the engine failures that have occurred I decided to take a serious OCD approach to the break in process. Besides the normal break in precautions I decided to do the first one around 100 miles, ended up being closer to 150 but still way early enough for my comfort level. I'll do a second around 500 and a third at the break in mileage of 1000. It has been a suspicion of mine that the oil pump gears being a weak spot on Ford V8's that I'd do everything possible to flush out as much residual particulate machining material as I could. I am very glad I did as there was considerable foreign matter in the top of my drain pan (I bought a 16 qt pan that drains into a reservoir. The drain area is left empty after the oil enters the reservoir, this is where I found small bits that I'm certain I do not want circulating around the engine. Don't want anything that might get past the filter going through the engine, especially being forced through the oil pump. Yes over the top I know but after spending so much and expending considerable effort to get this car, I'm taking no chances. Please no flaming, I am not for one second proposing this should be the norm and have never been this picky with a new car before but for this one I'm just being extra careful.

I've had a good deal of bourbon tonight. I"ll pass on a response.
Not so much that you could still spell and make two coherent sentences:lol:

OP, no one should flame you on being extra careful with these FPC 5.2s. Motor on

Noob question - does the car have a special break in oil? If I change my oil at 100 miles, should I try to get whatever that break in oil is until the break in is complete?

I intend on switching to synthetic after the break in is complete

No break in oil. Your OEM oil is Motorcraft SAE 5W- 50 Full Synthetic Motor Oil per page 44 of the owners manual supplement. The only other option that meets Ford specs is Amsoil.

Motorcraft and Amsoil are good but not the best oil for this engine. Those specs make me cringe, specialized tests designed to get money out of the formulators. They mean little to nothing in performance or real life, other than money pits for the formulators to jump through stupid loops.

@OP, you would be fine draining at 500 and then 2500 and then resuming your normal interval.

I'd agree under normal conditions. In the case of these engines and the already documented engine failures which I find excessive per/number of engines built I'm being cautious in the extreme. With new engines I've broken over the years all I've ever done was the break-in change and been content. All I'm really trying to do in this case is flus out as much remnant particulate debris as I can. I find it cheap insurance for the piece of mind.

if you have that much wear in 500 miles to make a difference, you have other problems lol

Wear is not the concern but rather debris that results in virtually any engine as a normal byproduct of manufacturing. The first change left a noticeable amount of stuff in the drain pan. Its just a personal thing, I'm not even remotely suggesting any other owner even consider this, it's only my own OCD nature and wanting to be certain I did everything I'm comfortable with to ensure I have long engine life. I could easily be wasting time and money. Thanks for your input.

GTthree50,

I'll be following your advice. As you said it's cheap insurance and peace of mind.

Thanks:headbang:

why? it's a waste of money and resources. No way you have enough wear in 100 miles of new engine to justify an oil change at 100, 500 and 1000. Excessive waste. Trust me you're wasting.

^ Have you looked at the oil in these cars after the first oil change?? I'd guess not.

I did mine at 100 miles as well. All kinda of adhesive and glittery machining leftovers floating around in there. Personally, it's out and out. It's not like I'm changing it EVERY 100 miles.

yeah I only happen to test automotive engines and oil for a living.

..don't forget to add "shaming people for changing oil when they want to on their $60k car" to your resume.
