Hey guys my car has 1700 miles and about 4 months of age on the current oil. When I bought it I got a sticker saying first oil change at 5000 miles/6 months. Now I saw another thread, it might've been a thread by a Shelby owner saying how they had their oil changed at 1000 miles to get rid of the break in oil. Am I severely overdue and need to get rid of the oil from my car right now instead of waiting for a few months like the sticker says? Hopefully I wouldn't have sustained any internal damage because I let the oil stay in too long? Or am I fine and can wait until I get to the 5k/6 month mark?

Do a search for oil change. There are a lot of different opinions. I waited. Others have done 3 oil changes by now. if FORD had any doubt it would have suggested it in the manual. You will be fine! Go to 5k/6k mark.

Thank you I will do a search to see different opinions. Happy to hear that I'm in-line with what others are doing!

Dude, you are severely risking the life of your engine. In the first 5,000 miles I changed the oil every 150 miles just to be sure.

OK, I am kidding, I went the full 5k miles before the first oil change myself, but it did not take me that long, I think it was around 3 months in.

You will be fine. I am at ~3k and still have my factory fill. I don't drive much in the winter so I am waiting till spring to change and I have no worries. I have also heard the arguement of changing too early can prevent proper break in of the engine, in fact I think the manual on my Honda Pilot said something about not changing before xxxx miles to allow proper break in so I am not a believer in all this "gotta get this break in oil/metal particles out". I think some people over do things to give themselves a warm fuzzy that they have a better engine than the next guy because they did something in excess.

Yeah the reason for the low miles is because I don't drive my car much in the winter, since it's still new I think I'm just afraid to lol.

Rustang that's interesting, I usually hear the opposite that you should be getting rid of the first oil asap, never thought of it as changing too early could mess with break in. Makes a lot of sense to me actually

I have done oil analysis on my car since new. You see the reports in my journal thread (link in my signature). For normal usage, you aren't going to harm the engine by not changing in the first 1000 miles. This topic tends to result in many different opinions :-)

I've just taken the time to skim through your journal thread. Seems like there's no harm no foul at all in going for the recommended oil service interval, and I was surprised in seeing you even pushed it to 7500 miles or so (with no ill effects). I haven't yet thought to check my oil level yet, mostly because that annoying strut bar is directly in the way, but I'll begin doing that now.

I went the way of the first oil change at 1,000 miles and next change at 7,500 miles. The fact that made me due this is because of another manufacturer running into engine failures on vehicles that were track driven. The failures were traced to the engine build process and certain sealants finding their way to the oil filter resulting in reduced oil pressure under extreme conditions. I know it is a different manufacturer and I'm not on a track and I'm not stressing the engine but the cost of an oil change for peace of mind I thought was worth it. The factory fill is not a break in oil so you dont have to be concerned about that.

I've driven the car quite spirited a few times but not frequently, and rarely letting revs get past 5.5k during those spirited on ramp runs etc. You are correct that the cost is minimal for peace of mind, I've seen a good deal on a believe LMR a full Motorcraft oil change for $50.

For daily driver follow the oil meter in the settings on the dash. Unless you have money just to burn just because. Don't listen to "forum experts/engineers" over what Ford says and its likely multiple hundreds of years of experience from people they employ.

Ford has no incentive to see your engine croak at 10k miles because they would have to pay for warranty repairs, so if it needed to be changed earlier on the 1st change they would recommend it. Their recommendations in the manual/car settings are well tested for daily driving habits.

If beating on it racing then sooner.

Correlating to oil life monitor, I could taken it probably closer to 10000 miles. I use the 7500 interval because it dovetails with 15000, 30000, 45000, etc.

Again my use case is normal driving. This car is not raced, but does see blasts to redline in the first 2 gears. If this was a weekend warrior with aggressive driving, it would be different.

For the record, I provide this information based solely on my experience, not as a technical expert. There are others who do differently based on their usage and knowledge. Unless Blackstone Labs is providing false data, you can see their comments mention going longer between intervals.

First change @ 6K, no issues, daily driver with a few spirited runs.
I drive 80 miles per day on the interstate at 75+, if I were at slower speeds and shorter distance's like city use, I'd be changing out more frequently.
Oil needs to be at full operating temp to do it's job. More damage is done at start up.
Just my 2 cents.

Not that I put much faith in the computer-determined oil change intervals, but mine came up and told me to change at about 3300 miles. Consequently, I had just done the first change at 3k miles. I put about 3k miles s year in the car so I'll continue to do every 3k/12 months.
