Probably not the best place to post, but I believe this will get more attention and traction here.

I owned a new ‘18 6MT PP1 GT back in 2018 and I had the dreaded piston slap cylinder wall scoring issue that was plaguing a lot of GT’s around that time. I even had the bbq tick after my first oil change. My car sounded like a rolling calamity. Another issue was the 3-4 fork on the MT82 was snapping under stock power. These issues, especially the engine problem was all over these forums. I read nightmare after nightmare experiences people were going through with dealers and Ford themselves to rectify this problem. Anything from complete claims denials to improper method of repair was rampant. Some were only getting short block replacements, while others were getting the proper long block replacement. Either way, guys were without their cars for months and some even after multiple long blocks still had problems. Lastly, people were even having issues with the 10R80(gear hunting/jerking/improper down and upshifts..etc). Obvious to say, but I got rid of mine because of these critical mechanical problems.

Fast forward….I’m currently looking to get back into a used ‘22 S550 GT 10R80(3.55) and I’m wondering if these problems still exist today, or if Ford actually fixed their sh*t. Would like to hear any and all info/feedback you guys can give me so I can make the proper decision on whether or not to pull the trigger. If you guys need more info on the vehicle I’m looking at, hit me up.

Thanks in advance!

I have a blown 22’ GT Roush P2 e85 t56 Magnum swap with 11k on odo and car made 800+ whp on stock motor.

As my pops used to say the car “runs like a striped ape”

My suggestion is kop the whip and drive it till the wheels fall off…lol

If I had loads of disposable income, I would have pulled the trigger yesterday. I’m not necessarily making fat stacks, and I don’t feel like getting f*cked over twice. Like you, she’s gonna get the sauce; whether it be a roots/centrifugal blower or TT’s. I just don’t want a compromised drivetrain to worry about.…..again!

Totally Understand. I have 4 kids all under 18 so I know the sentiment well.

My suggestion is find a good s550 which has been tastefully modified by someone who knows what’s up with these cars and go from there.

The mt82 is definitely not made for boost unless fully built. Ben Calimer.

Or Tremec swap like me.

I have a 2021 GT/CS and after I installed the M-9603-M8B kit the car has been very enjoyable. Runs great, handles good, looks awesome.

My 2021 been pretty solid with the ~900whp... still on stock MT-82. Only issues I've really had were a couple leaking Direct Injectors.

2018-2021ish 10r80 were hit or miss, the 10r80 had a minor update in 2021 that made them run smoother and more reliably.

My 2018 10r80 was a clunky mess from factory, and progressively got worse over time. After a dozen+ dealer visits across 5 years and multiple different dealers, the transmission finally showed signs of terminal failure that the tech ride along could no longer ignore as just "it's normal".

There are earlier signs of failure besides just clunky shift behavior:

Near trans endlife, the car would stall, shift back/forth raggedly and buck me on cold starts.

Just before 50K miles and my warranty expires, I got a post 2021 new transmission replacement in 2024, and it shifted noticably better and smoother. Then I got a wengerd trans tune and its even better than before!

Check out the the heat scoring on my old 10r80 - this was all on a stock power 5.0 mind you...

This '22 with light mods runs strong (MT though). Occasional tick before fully warmed up.

22 bone stock. Only issue was the front left strut had to be replaced. It is not my daily, owned since new and have 16k on the odometer. Overall I’ve been pleased with the car.

I have a 22 MT82. Boosted and has been ok. I do not trust the trans, but Im also not power shifting it constantly or beating on it. 17k and 10k with boost. The tick is just inherent to the motors. Some have some dont to some degree. Ceratec will kill that noise. These have been pretty reliable as a platform. Even Ford is selling them with 800HP now on stock internals and parts. Like anything is a crap shoot. You'll see people that baby their rides and are always having issues while others drive it like the stole it and it just takes it. Seems like you need to be somewhere in-between. Try to find a low mileage ride with proper service on it and should be ok. If you're chasing times go auto, if you just like to drive and a more connected feeling, manual.

My 2018 GT (built 3/18) with the MT82 has been fine. I think many of the issues with the 2018s were blown out of proportion by owners who got themselves in too deep financially and hoping for a buyback to get out from under a loan, or people just looking to make content.

I was scared of potential issues, then I stopped worrying and just drove it more.
