Draining Coolant

How do you guys do it. The drain petcock on my Mishi radiator is NOT accessible with the belly pan in place. Going to change the expansion tank, and trying to figure out how to get the fluid level low enough for that without making a complete and total mess. Just brainstorming how to get there.

You can disconnect both small hoses on the tank, unbolt the tank and empty it, but you’re still going to make a mess. There’s just no way around it. I did it this way at first, but I knew I wanted to extract all coolant, so I followed that up with purchasing an Airlift coolant removal/filler kit.

Just take off the belly pan, lol. If you drain from the rad with the front end elevated, you only lose about a gallon but it avoids making a mess when you remove the reservoir or thermostat.
Agreed! Those belly pans pick up a lot of dirt and crap too, so it would hurt to pull it and clean it off anyways.

I haven't done this car yet, but on past cars I have found it helpful to start out carefully trying not to make a mess then accept fate and opt for the complete and total mess method partway through.

I have the Airlift refill tool, and it works great for refilling the coolant and checking for vacuum leaks, but it does not work to drain the system. I finally got a John Dow Fluid Evacuator from JB Tool (JDI-6EV) and it works great for any type of fluid extraction (oil, coolant, trans fuild, etc.), and the best part is no mess and no crawling under the car!

I finally got a John Dow Fluid Evacuator from JB Tool (JDI-6EV) and it works great for any type of fluid extraction (oil, coolant, trans fuild, etc.), and the best part is no mess and no crawling under the car!
Mine worked for me. It definitely beats the alternative of paying someone a lot of money to do it for me. Good price for as often as it will be needed too. I hadn’t heard of the Fluid Evacuator from John Dow.

Airlift definitely is faster, these cars like to trap air in the heater core. You can bleed them manually on ramps but it takes a bit of time.

The belly pan in and of itself isn't the end of the world, but I do hate having to take the whole splitter off to do it. One of those 'juice isn't worth the squeeze' type situations. All that time and labor for two seconds of letting some fluid out. Ugh.

Hook up a drain hose to the bleeder fitting on the radiator and leave it in place. When the time comes to do this again, you can pull a few push pins from thr right wheel well liner, move it aside, reach in and open the drain (all without having to remove the belly pan).

I was gonna suggest this, you need a 3/8 hose. The only reason I stopped is that at least on my PP radiator, it seems like you end up making a bit of a mess when you open the drain too far. Would suck to clean without proper access to the area if that's something of concern.

I just used a turkey baster and sucked all the coolant out, emptying into a clean container. Pinched off the hoses, installed, then refilled. That ugly jellybean had to go.

Searched site and Youtube, but did not find suffice video I was looking for.

I realize this thread was about changing the football coolant tub, but instead of starting a new thread just yet, I figured I would add to this one.

2018 GT350 due for first coolant flush at 6 years.

Would like to do this to peace of mind retain my Ford ESP warranty.

How do you guys do it?

Per manual, I have engine coolant capacity: 15.2 U.S. qt, but I imagine some will be left in block and hoses, which is fine because I am only going to to proper flush and document my service as I do with DIY oil changes.

I buy from Rock Auto and will go with their MOTORCRAFT VC13G Yellow Antifreeze prediluted, as this is what Rock Auto has and I trust their site.

Will burp system with heater on high.

As always, will be working with low profile jacks and stands.

Going to dealer is NOT an option for me on this (what should be simple) DIY.

Any other tips?

I will probably think of more questions later, but that is all for now.

Sorry for long post, but I know I am in the right place to get answers from GT350 people, and also those OCD people, and those that may track their car and have flushed coolant more frequently.

Look forward to any help. Not looking to shortcut or half-ass the coolant flush, but rather work smarter, not harder.

Meh, a little over a year old, not too bad, LOL. I'll respond to some of this. As big as your thread was, you really didn't have that many questions burried in there, and it sounds like you got a great plan and don't need a lot of help anyways.

It is not easily accessible, if at all. There's no easy way to do it with belly pan in place and not make a f&%$ing mess.

Don't overthink it. It's small. 38" at best. Some cheap piece of hose you have stuck in a tool box drawer somewhere.

Complete waste and an old wives tale. This does absolutely nothing. Coolant is circulating through the heater core all the time. Your temp control is through the mixing doors under the dash. Nothing controls or otherwise limits the flow through that system at any time. Plus, this system is completely designed to "burp" itself as soon as it's circulating, and it does quite a good job at it. The only thing running the heat does is make you hot.
