You memory must be suffering. I have a perfectly restored 49 Hudson.
Certainly not impossible, but I remember seeing some such factory setups back in the day. And in my defense I did say “many if not most”.

Just curious: what does your Hudson do for crankcase ventilation?

Road draft tube. In 49 all cars did it that way

I think it was 68 when the road draft tube went away.

PCV system; The very first pollution controlled emission device. Thank Ronald Reagan for signing the all important CARB legislation in 1967.
Bye Bye Road Draft Tubes.........Hello reduced photochemical smog.

PCV systems were required on all new cars sold in California beginning in 1961 and nationwide in '63.

Reagan signed CARB into law in 67. But the PCV valve system was already in place since around 60. My 63 Corvette was a PCV system.

The CARB rules brought air pumps and eventually cats. Not just PCVs.

Until the early 1960s, these blow-by gases were removed simply by letting air circulate freely through the crankcase, wafting away the gases and venting them as emissions. Then, in the early 1960s, positive crankshaft ventilation (PCV) was invented. This is now considered the beginning of automobile emission control.

Reagan may have signed it into law in 67. But the PCV valve system was already in place since around 60. My 63 Corvette was a PCV system.
I’m pretty sure that range was my recollection.

A quick history lesson for all who chose to read it. Up to 1967ish the PCV system was voluntary by the OE's.

Air pumps, EGR's pellet filled Cats, vacuum advance/retard distrubutors ......... I'm glad all that crap is in the ash heap of gasoline burning engine history. The Mfg's have come a long way since those early emission days.

ice445 has the best reply so far.

Forget to empty it or it becomes blocked say good bye to your engine seals.
Poof, in an instant !!!
The OEM's don't install serviceable catch cans for a reason.
Even if it becomes full there will be no more than the normal amount of oil ingestion. Would have to ignore the catch can for like 10k miles to fill it though.

I run 10k OCI on the Ford Performance oil separator and I’ve never seen more than 1/3 full.
Lets say it did fill up, I don’t see the screen allowing enough oil flow to stop an increase in crankcase pressure.
Third picture is with M12 Milwaukee LED light.

That is the Ford Performance oil catch can separator multilayered screen.
Looks like a small, slightly misshapen engine air filter. :cwl:
