We took the Mach 1 out to the track this weekend (Summit Point Main) and I ran into the dreaded diff overheating error after about 15 minutes at speed. I was hoping this would be avoided given it has the diff cooler from the GT350/500 in it, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I'll be swapping the oil out to 75W140 soon, but I wanted to find out if anyone else has seen these issues in either a Mach 1 or a GT350?

Update 10/6/2021 - got the car back. Ford replaced the diff cooler pump. I won't be able to test it until next season, but hopefully this resolves it.

That's really odd that it would happen.

Have you checked to make sure there's no leak and/or the pump is working properly?

No leaks as far as I can tell.

Pump does seem to be working as when my son is on track it's able to maintain temps. I'm a bit faster than he is, and it doesn't seem to be able to keep up.

We just got back last night, so I haven't had the opportunity to explicitly test the pump, but given he's only a second or so slower than I am on track I would imagine it would have failed for him if it wasn't working at all.

Have you ever checked the differential fluid level?
What was the air temperature?
Are you sure the pump can handle 75W140 when the spec. fluid is 75W85?

I haven't checked it yet as the car is only a month old. Planning on checking it now

It was about 77-80 degrees or so outside. Not crazy hot or anything.

I added to my original questions your choice of a higher viscosity fluid and the pump's ability to handle it.

Yeah, I believe the answer is "yes". Several GT350 guys run the heavier weight oil (which is also the same when cold of 75W)

What was the maintained average speed/RPM's?

What lap times were you running or can you give more details about where/when on the track you had an overheating message? Not many are familiar with all track layouts, so the more details you give as to the above and other questions the better folks can really help out on here.

What trans gear was being used more prominently?

Had you checked the fluid level of the rear diff before tracking - as a pre-track check list? Don't ever assume brand new units are topped off or full.

I only say the above because there's been plenty of threads on here regarding 10R80's coming right from the factory to customers hands being low on fluid. I wouldn't doubt it at all if other S550 driveline related components aren't being topped off.

I also would not be putting in a thicker weight rear diff fluid until checking to make sure it's compatible not only for the pump but overall operation. Colder days (track or not), fluid viscosity will be much thicker until it gets to op temps.

This is probably the 1st instance of a new M1 having a diff overheating issue.

You probably haven't, but I'll ask - have you reached out to the Ford Performance folks for their opinions?

Track is a relatively fast track, avg speeds b/w 45-145. Predominantly 3-5 gears. I'm a faster driver, so tend to be harder on cars.

Did not check the rear diff fluid initially, but will do that shortly. l

I have not reached out to Ford Performance yet. Good idea, actually, so I'll do that now.

Let us know what comes out of the discussion with Ford Performance folks. I think they've been running the M1's at their Track Attack events now, so if you experienced any overheating events - I would only assume maybe they have as well (but nothing has been publicized).

I'm assuming you have the Tremec in your M1, or did you opt for the 10R80?
